Nguyễn Huy Thiệp
Nguyễn Huy Thiệp (Hanoi, 29 April 1950 – 20 March 2021) was a Vietnamese writer. He has been described as Vietnam's most influential writer. In 1992, before Bảo Ninh (1993) and Dương Thu Hương (1996), he was the first to write a major novel taking the gloss off the " American War" experience. Bảo Ninh
Hoàng Ấu Phương, known by the pen name Bảo Ninh (born 18 October 1952), is a Vietnamese novelist, essayist and writer of short stories, best known for his first novel, published in English as '' The Sorrow of War''. Vietnam war Ninh recounted that American bombing raids during the Vietnam War, beginning in 1965 when he was 12-13, destroyed ordinary people's homes and upended their lives. Ninh stated that his own school in Hanoi was relocated as a result of the bombing, which inspired him to anger rather than fear. Ninh stated that Americans entering Vietnam were viewed as no different from earlier French colonizers, and that he inherited this view himself from his parents. During the war, Ninh served in the Glorious 27th Youth Brigade, joining when he was 17 years old. Dương Thu Hương
Dương Thu Hương (born 1947) is a Vietnamese author and political dissident. Biography Early life Born in 1947 in Thái Bình a province in northern Vietnam, Dương Thu Hương came of age just as the Vietnam War was turning violent. At the age of twenty, when she was a student at Vietnamese Ministry of Culture’s Arts College, Dương Thu Hương volunteered to serve in a women’s youth brigade on the front lines of "The War Against the Americans". Dương Thu Hương spent the next seven years of the war in the jungles and tunnels of ''Bình Trị Thiên'', the most heavily bombarded region of the war. Her mission was to "sing louder than the bombs" and to give theatrical performances for the North Vietnamese troops, but also to tend to the wounded, bury the dead, and accompany the soldiers along.
