The Newcastle District was a historic district in Upper Canada which existed until 1849. It was formed in 1802 from the Home District, consisting of the counties of Durham and Northumberland. History The legislature had enacted in 1798 that "as soon as there are one thousand souls within the said counties, and that six of the townships therein do hold town meetings according to law," the government shall constitute them as a separate district; which was done in 1802. The district town was originally Newcastle, located near the current town of Brighton, and then Amherst, later renamed Cobourg. Cobourg ( ) is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in Southern Ontario east of Toronto and east of Oshawa. It is the largest town in and seat of Northumberland County. Rice Lake is a lake located in Northumberland County, Ontario, Northumberland and Peterborough County, Peterborough counties in south-eastern Ontario. The lake is located south of the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Peterborough, and the Kawartha Lakes (Ontario), Kawartha Lakes and north of Cobourg. It is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, which flows into the lake by the Otonabee River, Otonabee and out via the Trent River (Ontario), Trent. The lake is long and 5 km wide. The Kawartha Lakes (/kə'wɔrθɐ/) are a chain of lakes in south-central Ontario, Canada that form the upper watershed of the Trent River. The lakes are located on the boundary between the Paleozoic limestone regions of the Golden Horseshoe, and the Precambrian granite Canadian Shield of northern and central Ontario. "Kawartha" is an anglicization of the word "Ka-wa-tha" (from "Ka-wa-tae-gum-maug" or ''Gaa-waategamaag''), a word coined in 1895 by Anishinaabekwe Martha Whetung of the Curve Lake First Nations. Presqu'ile Provincial Park
Presqu'ile Provincial Park is a park in southeastern Northumberland County on the north shore of Lake Ontario near the town of Brighton in Ontario, Canada. The park occupies an area of . The name of the park is the French word for peninsula, or literally "almost island", and was believed to be named by Samuel De Champlain on his second expedition. The Presqu'ile (Ontario), peninsula was formed when a limestone island was connected to the mainland by a sand spit; this kind of formation is referred to as a tombolo. Nature and ecology The park's wetlands are one of the larger wetlands along the north shore of Lake Ontario, and are noteworthy for the many sand ridges running through them, which increases habitat diversity.
