The New York Yankees of the American Football League (1940), third American Football League was the third professional American football team competing under that name. It is unrelated to the New York Yankees (NFL), Yankees of the American Football League (1926), first AFL (and the National Football League), the New York Yankees (1936 AFL), Yankees of the American Football League (1936), second AFL, and the (later) New York Yankees (AAFC), Yankees of the All-America Football Conference. The Yankees played their home games in Yankee Stadium (1923), Yankee Stadium and Downing Stadium in New York, New York. John Kimbrough
John Alec Kimbrough (June 14, 1918 – May 8, 2006) was a college athlete, a member of the Texas Legislature, the star of two western movies and a rancher. His older brother Frank Kimbrough served as head football coach for the Baylor Bears and the West Texas State Buffaloes. Football Kimbrough, an alumnus of Texas A&M University, was known as the "Haskell Hurricane" when he played Texas A&M Aggies football team. He played fullback on the Aggie's undefeated 1939 national championship team. In 1940 he finished second to the University of Michigan's Tom Harmon in Heisman Trophy balloting. According to his College Football Hall of Fame biography, ''Jarrin' John'' was a punishing 6 ft 2 in tall 210 lb running back known for breaking tackles with his high knee action who was honored with induction into that organization in 1954. The 1940 AFL season was the first season of the third American Football League. The league was formed when the New York Yankees, Boston Bears, and Buffalo Indians were joined by the Cincinnati Bengals, Columbus Bullies, and Milwaukee Chiefs of the minor American Professional Football Association (the mass defection doomed the minor league). The Milwaukee Chiefs were a professional American football team based in Wisconsin that competed in the third American Football League in 1940 and in 1941. The team played its home games in the Dairy Bowl at State Fair Park in West Allis, a suburb just west of Milwaukee.
