New York Riptide
The New York Riptide were a professional box lacrosse franchise based in Uniondale, New York. They were members of the Eastern Conference of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and played home games at Nassau Coliseum and began their first season in 2019. 2024 was the team's final season in Uniondale as the Riptide moved to Ottawa, with the team rebranding as the Ottawa Black Bears beginning with the 2024-2025 season. History On December 12, 2018, the NLL awarded an expansion franchise to Uniondale, New York and owner GF Sports. The team began play in December 2019 with its home arena being the Nassau Coliseum. The Riptide mark the return of the National Lacrosse League to the Long Island area after the departure of the New York Saints (1989–2003) and the New York Titans (2006–2009), both of whom also played at Nassau Coliseum. Box Lacrosse
Box lacrosse, also known as boxla, box, or indoor lacrosse, is an indoor version of lacrosse played mostly in North America. The game originated in the 1930s in Canada, where it is more popular than field lacrosse. Lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport. Box lacrosse is played between two teams of five players and one goalie each, and is traditionally played on an ice hockey rink once the ice has been removed or covered. The playing area is called a box, in contrast to the open playing field of field lacrosse. The object of the game is to use a lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by shooting a solid rubber lacrosse ball into the opponent's goal. Regy Thorpe
Regy Thorpe (born November 27, 1971) is currently the head coach of the women’s lacrosse team at Syracuse University, where he played the sport collegiately. He is a former professional lacrosse player for the Rochester Knighthawks in the National Lacrosse League. He played his entire NLL career with the Knighthawks. He also played with the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse. Currently, Thorpe is the head coach for the Hamilton Nationals of Major League Lacrosse. Career Thorpe played for two years at Herkimer County Community College, where he earned All-America honors and was named the NJCAA Defenseman of the Year in 1991. He then enrolled at Syracuse University and helped the Orange to the national finals in 1992. In his senior season, Thorpe earned All-America honors after leading Syracuse to a national title as a team captain. The Saskatchewan Rush are a Canadian professional box lacrosse team based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, that competes in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The team plays its home games at SaskTel Centre. Formerly the Edmonton Rush, the team has won the NLL championship twice since their move to Saskatchewan, in 2016 and 2018. Ottawa Rebel
The Ottawa Rebel was a team in the National Lacrosse League based in Ottawa, Ontario from 2001 until 2003. They initially played at the Corel Centre (now called the Canadian Tire Centre), but part-way through the 2002 season moved to the smaller, but centrally located, Ottawa Civic Centre. From 1997 until 2000 the team was located in Syracuse, New York and was called the Syracuse Smash. The Rebel was owned by the Brad Watters group which also brought lacrosse to Toronto and Montreal. In their first season in Ottawa, the Rebel had one win and thirteen losses and finished last of nine teams. Their second season was slightly better, with four wins and twelve losses, but due to tie breakers they finished fourth in the Northern Division and thirteenth overall behind the Calgary Roughnecks, who also finished with a 4–12 record.
