New York City Subway
The New York City Subway is a rapid transit system in New York City serving the New York City boroughs, boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. It is owned by the government of New York City and leased to the New York City Transit Authority, an affiliate agency of the Government of New York (state), state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Opened on October 27, 1904, the New York City Subway is one of the world's oldest public transit systems, one of the most-used, and the one with the second-most stations after the Beijing Subway, with New York City Subway stations, 472 stations in operation (423, if stations connected by transfers are counted as single stations). R62A (New York City Subway Car)
The R62A is a New York City Subway car model built between 1984 and 1987 by Bombardier Transportation for the A Division (New York City Subway), A Division. The cars were built in La Pocatière, Quebec, with final assembly done in Auburn, New York and Barre, Vermont (city), Barre, Vermont, under a license from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, manufacturer of the previous R62 (New York City Subway car), R62 order. A total of 825 cars were built, arranged as sets of three, four, or five cars per set. The cars replaced the remaining R17 (New York City Subway car), R17s, R21 (New York City Subway car), R21s, and R22 (New York City Subway car), R22s, which were all retired by early 1988. The R62As were a follow-up order to the R62 order from 1981, and the second order of stainless steel cars for the "A" Division. Second Avenue Subway
The Second Avenue Subway (internally referred to as the IND Second Avenue Line by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, MTA and abbreviated to SAS) is a New York City Subway line that runs under Second Avenue (Manhattan), Second Avenue on the East Side (Manhattan), East Side of Manhattan. The first phase of this new line, with three new stations on Manhattan's Upper East Side, opened on January 1, 2017. A third rail, also known as a live rail, electric rail or conductor rail, is a method of providing electric power to a railway locomotive or train, through a semi-continuous rigid conductor placed alongside or between the rails of a track (rail transport), railway track. Coney Island is a neighborhood and entertainment area in the southwestern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The West End Line or New Utrecht Avenue Line was a surface transit line in Brooklyn, New York City, United States, running along New Utrecht Avenue and other streets between Coney Island and Sunset Park. Built by the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Railroad as a steam line, it became a trolley line, along which elevated trains ran until the new elevated BMT West End Line opened. IRT Ninth Avenue Line
The IRT Ninth Avenue Line, often called the Ninth Avenue Elevated or Ninth Avenue El, was the first elevated railway in New York City. It opened in July 1868 as the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway, as an experimental single-track Cable car (railway), cable-powered elevated railway from Battery Place, at the south end of Manhattan Island, northward up Greenwich Street to Cortlandt Street (Manhattan), Cortlandt Street. By 1879 the line was extended to the Harlem River at 155th Street station (IRT Ninth Avenue Line), 155th Street. It was electrified and taken over by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in 1903. Interborough Rapid Transit Company
The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) was the private operator of New York City's original underground subway line that opened in 1904, as well as earlier elevated railways and additional rapid transit lines in New York City.
