New Town, Tasmania
New Town is a suburb of the city of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, about north of the central business district of Hobart. It is generally considered Hobart's oldest suburb, settled just a week after Sullivans Cove. It was historically the home of many of Hobart's wealthiest citizens, and New Town features a large number of grand residences, churches, and public buildings. The large farms were broken up following the world wars and it is now an inner city residential suburb. Many of its streets are lined with Federation style cottages. It is surrounded by the suburbs of North Hobart, Tasmania, North Hobart, Mount Stuart, Tasmania, Mount Stuart, Lenah Valley, Tasmania, Lenah Valley and Moonah, Tasmania, Moonah, with the Queens Domain, Queen's Domain just to the south-east. Division Of Clark (state)
The electoral division of Clark, formerly known as the electoral division of Denison is one of the five electorates in the Tasmanian House of Assembly, it is located in Hobart on the western shore of the River Derwent and includes the suburbs below Mount Wellington. Clark is named after Andrew Inglis Clark, a Tasmanian jurist who was the principal author of the Australian Constitution. The electorate shares its name and boundaries with the federal division of Clark. The electorate was renamed from the electoral division of Denison in September 2018. Denison was named after Sir William Denison, who was Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land (1847–55), and Governor of New South Wales (1855–61). The renaming of the electorate to Clark was in line with the renaming of the federal division of Denison to Clark. St John's Anglican Church, New Town
St John's Anglican Church is an Anglican Church of Australia, Anglican church located in , Tasmania, Australia, notable for its unbroken record of use as a parish church, from the first service on 20 December 1835 to the present day. The parish is administered by the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania. The building was designed by the Government of Tasmania, Tasmanian government civil engineer and architect, Dublin-born John Lee Archer, who had been appointed in 1826 and arrived in Hobart Town in August 1827. The church was built by labourers and tradespeople from amongst the convicts on the island. Italianate Architecture
The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style combined its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture with picturesque aesthetics. Federation architecture is the architectural style in Australia that was prevalent from around 1890 to 1915. The name refers to the Federation of Australia on 1 January 1901, when the British colonies of Australia collectively became the Commonwealth of Australia. Hobart City High School is a government co-educational high school in New Town, Hobart. Hobart City High School was formed in 2022 when Oglivie High School and New Town High School merged. The merged schools are now co-educational and were the last of Tasmania's single-sex public schools. Hobart City High caters for approximately 1200 students from Years 7 to 12.
