Neponset is a district in the southeastern corner of Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts, United States. John Eliot (missionary)
John Eliot ( – 21 May 1690) was a Puritan missionary to the Native Americans of the United States, American Indians who some called "the apostle to the Indians" and the founder of Roxbury Latin School in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1645. In 1660 he completed the enormous task of translating the ''Eliot Indian Bible'' into the Massachusett language, Massachusett Indian language, producing more than two thousand completed copies. Early life and education Eliot was born in Widford, Hertfordshire, England, and lived at Nazeing as a boy. He attended Jesus College, Cambridge. After college, he became assistant to Thomas Hooker at a private school in Little Baddow, Essex. After Hooker was forced to flee to the Netherlands, Eliot emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, arranging passage as chaplain on the ship ''Lyon'' and arriving on 3 November 1631. Ponkapoag , also Punkapaug, Punkapoag, Ponkhapoag or Punkapog, is the name of a Native American "praying town" settled in the late 17th century western Blue Hills area of eastern Massachusetts by persons who had accepted Christianity. It was established in 1657, during the colonization of the Atlantic seaboard of the United States by settlers from Britain. This was the name given to the winter residence (and subsequently to the tribe) of the group of Massachusett who lived at the mouth of the Neponset River near Dorchester in the summer, in what colonists called Neponset Mill. Ponkapoag is now contained almost entirely by the town of Canton, Massachusetts. The name is derived from a nearby pond south of Great Blue Hill; Ponkapoag means "shallow pond" or "a spring that bubbles from red soil".
