Nepal Bhasa Manka Khala
Nepāl Bhāsā Mankā Khala ( ne, नेपालभाषा मनका खला) is an umbrella organization of groups and societies dedicated to the development of Nepal Bhasa and culture in Nepal. It was founded in 1979 by Newar language lovers to fight for linguistic and cultural rights against the repression of the Panchayat regime. Background After suffering years of suppression under the Rana dynasty, Nepal Bhasa experienced a brief period of freedom following the revolution of 1951 that brought democracy in Nepal. However, in 1960, parliament was abolished and the Panchayat system was established, and language rights were again suppressed. The autocratic regime imposed a one-language policy under which Nepal Bhasa and other languages were progressively removed from the media and schools, and campaigners for language rights were jailed. Nepal Sambat
Nepal Sambat, also spelled as Nepala Sambata, (Nepal Bhasa: , Nepali: ) is the lunisolar calendar used by the Newari people of Nepal. The Calendar era began on 20 October 879 AD, with 1142 in Nepal Sambat corresponding to the year 2021–2022 AD. Nepal Sambat appeared on coins, stone and copper plate inscriptions, royal decrees, chronicles, Hindu and Buddhist manuscripts, legal documents and correspondence. Nepal Sambat is declared a national calendar in Nepal, is used mostly by the Newar community whilst Bikram Sambat (B.S) also remains a dominant calendar throughout the country. Newar Language
Newar (), or Newari and known officially in Nepal as Nepal Bhasa, is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by the Newar people, the indigenous inhabitants of Nepal Mandala, which consists of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding regions in Nepal. "Nepal Bhasa" literally means "Nepalese language", however the language is not the same as Nepali (Devanāgarī: नेपाली), the country's current official language of the central government. The two languages belong to different language families (Sino-Tibetan and Indo-European, respectively), but centuries of contact have resulted in a significant body of shared vocabulary. ''Nepal Bhasa Patrika'' ( ne, नेपाल भाषा पत्रिका) was the first daily newspaper in the Newar language. It launched on 28 September 1955 from Kathmandu, Nepal. The first editor and publisher was Phatte Bahadur Singh. ''Nepal Bhasa Patrika'' (meaning "Nepal Language Periodical") ceased publication in 1983. Singh (1902-1983) was a Nepal Bhasa writer and suffered persecution for his literary activities. In 1939, he edited and published an anthology of poems by various poets entitled ''Nepali Bihar''. For this act, the Nepalese government sentenced him to life in prison. He was in jail from 1941 to 1945, and was released with the other people arrested with him. Nepal Bhasa poets Chittadhar Hridaya and Siddhicharan Shrestha were also in prison with Singh for a similar offence. Padma Ratna Tuladhar
Padma Ratna Tuladhar ( ne, पद्मरत्न तुलाधर) (1940–2018) was a Nepalese politician and human rights activist. A resident of Kathmandu, he played an instrumental role in bringing the Nepali Maoists to mainstream politics from armed struggle. He was elected to the Rastriya Panchayat from Kathmandu in the 1986 election. Following the restoration of multi party democracy he was elected to the Pratinidhi Sabha from Kathmandu 4 in 1991. He served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari as Minister for Labour and Health. Tuladhar died at Kathmandu on 4 November 2018 due to a brain hemorrhage.
