Nelson River DC Transmission System
The Nelson River DC Transmission System, also known as the Manitoba Bipole, is an electric power transmission system of three High-voltage direct current, high voltage, direct current lines in Manitoba, Canada, operated by Manitoba Hydro as part of the Nelson River Hydroelectric Project. It is now recorded on the list of IEEE Milestones in electrical engineering. Several records have been broken by successive phases of the project, including the largest (and last) mercury-arc valves, the highest DC transmission voltage and the first use of water cooling, water-cooled thyristor valves in HVDC. Rosser is a List of rural municipalities in Manitoba, rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba, lying adjacent to the northwest side of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Winnipeg and part of the Winnipeg Metro Region. Its population as of the 2016 Canadian Census, 2016 Census was 1,372. In electrical engineering, the Ferranti effect is the increase in voltage occurring at the receiving end of a very long (> 200 km) AC electric power transmission line, relative to the voltage at the sending end, when the load is very small, or no load is connected. It can be stated as a factor, or as a percent increase. It was first observed during the installation of underground cables in Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti's 10,000-volt AC power distribution system in 1887. The capacitive line charging current produces a voltage drop across the line inductance that is in-phase with the sending-end voltage, assuming negligible line resistance. Therefore, both line inductance and capacitance are responsible for this phenomenon. Kettle Generating Station
The Kettle Generating Station, also known as Kettle Rapids Generating Station, is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station on the Lower Nelson River in Manitoba, Canada. It is located northwest of Gillam. As part of the Nelson River Hydroelectric Project, the power station was completed in 1973 and the last generator commissioned in 1974. It has an installed capacity of and is the second largest power station in Manitoba. Construction on the station began in the spring of 1966 and it was carried out in several phases. First, the power house was constructed after a circular coffer dam was set on the right side of the river. Second, the spillway was built adjacent and to the left of the power house while the river flowed through the power house in the meantime. Once the spillway was complete the entire the river was diverted through it. Sundance, Manitoba
Sundance was a community near the Nelson River in Northern Manitoba that was constructed starting in 1975 to house the workers (and families) of the Limestone Dam project, who were employees of Manitoba Hydro, GE, and other companies. Sundance was shut down from November 1978 to early 1985 while the Limestone Generating Station construction was put on temporary hiatus. The town was mostly trailers and portable buildings with an elementary school, grocery store, community centre & a few other small stores. Sundance was de-commissioned in September 1992 at the completion of the Limestone Generating Station Project. Google Maps satellite imagery shows that the town no longer exists and only empty lots and streets remain. Thyristor Valve
In an electric power transmission system, a thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) is a reactance connected in series with a bidirectional thyristor valve. The thyristor valve is phase-controlled, which allows the value of delivered reactive power to be adjusted to meet varying system conditions. Thyristor-controlled reactors can be used for limiting voltage rises on lightly loaded transmission lines.
