''Nedėldienio skaitymas'' () was a weekly Lithuanian-language Catholic newspaper published from 1905 to 1907 in Kaunas (then part of the Russian Empire). History With support from Bishop of Samogitia Mečislovas Leonardas Paliulionis, the first issue was published on 24 November 1905. It was one of the first legal Lithuanian periodicals after the Lithuanian press ban was lifted in 1904. It was published by the future bishop Antanas Karosas until 1906 when it was taken over by the Society of Saint Casimir and its chairman Adomas Dambrauskas-Jakštas. It was printed at the printing presses of Saliamonas Banaitis and Maksimas Sokolovskis. The circulation was 3,800 copies in 1907. After 102 issues, the newspaper was discontinued on 4 December 1907 when it was replaced by ' (Unity) which was published until 1933. Saliamonas Banaitis
Saliamonas Banaitis (; 15 July 1866 – 4 May 1933) was a Lithuanian printer, politician, and businessman. He was one of the twenty signatories of the Act of Independence of Lithuania in 1918. Early death of his father and brother forced Banaitis to quit school in order to work at his family's farm. Despite lack of higher education, he joined Lithuanian cultural life – smuggled banned Lithuanian press, assisted Vincas Kudirka with the publication of Lithuanian-language newspapers ''Varpas'' and ''Ūkininkas'', participated in the Great Seimas of Vilnius. In 1905, he moved to Kaunas and established the first Lithuanian printing press in the city. In close cooperation with the Society of Saint Casimir, his press published almost 400 books and ten periodicals. He founded a credit union in 1911. The ''Visuotinė lietuvių enciklopedija'' or VLE () is a 25-volume universal Lithuanian-language encyclopedia published by the Science and Encyclopaedia Publishing Institute from 2001 to 2014. VLE is the first published universal encyclopedia in post-Soviet Lithuania (it replaces the former ''Lietuviškoji Tarybinė Enciklopedija'' which was published in thirteen volumes from 1976 to 1985). The last volume, XXV, was published in July 2014. An additional volume of updates, error corrections, and indexes was published in 2015. The encyclopedia's twenty-five volumes contain nearly 122,000 articles and about 25,000 illustrations. Since June 2017, VLE is published as an online encyclopedia being updated to present day. Mečislovas Davainis-Silvestraitis (; 20 April 1849 – 31 May 1919) was a Lithuanian journalist, poet, publicist, folklorist, and Lithuanian book smugglers, book smugler during the Lithuanian National Revival, best known for his collection of Lithuanian folklore. Born to a family of petty Lithuanian nobles in Samogitia, Davainis-Silvestraitis was proud of his heritage. However, he showed little interest in working the inherited manor and accumulated debts. Having completed only three years of secondary education, he was interested in Lithuanian history, culture, and folklore. He collected about 700 folk tales, 250 folk songs, 500 short folklore sayings, 600 spells, 1,000 descriptions of folk medicine and medicinal herbs – most of which was collected in 1883–1890 in the area around Raseiniai. Jurgis Baltrušaitis
Jurgis Baltrušaitis (2 May 1873 – 3 January 1944) was a Lithuanian Symbolist poet and translator who wrote in Lithuanian and Russian, and was an exponent of iconology. He was the father of art historian and critic Jurgis Baltrušaitis Jr. Writer Baltrušaitis was born to a family of farmers in Paantvardys village near Jurbarkas, which was then under Imperial Russian rule. In 1885, he entered Kaunas gymnasium, and graduated in 1893; he then entered the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Moscow University. At the same time he attended lectures in the Faculty of History and Philology. From 1895 onwards Baltrušaitis began to take part in editing Moscow-based literary magazines, and he began to work in Russian.
