National Flag Square
State Flag Square () is a public square situated along Neftchiler Avenue in Bayil, Baku, Azerbaijan. Spanning , with its upper section covering , the square prominently displays national symbols of Azerbaijan, including the state coat of arms, anthem, and a bronze map of the country. Since 2024, it has flown the world’s largest flag. History The square was established by presidential decree on 17 November 2007, coinciding with the designation of 9 November as State Flag Day. Construction began on 30 December 2007 in Bayil, near the Naval Base, with President Ilham Aliyev attending the groundbreaking. In October 2009, an additional presidential order accelerated the project, allocating 10 million manats from the state reserve fund to the Baku City Executive Power. Martyrs' Lane or Alley of Martyrs (), formerly known as the Kirov Park, is a cemetery and memorial in Baku, Azerbaijan dedicated to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January 1990 and in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War of 1988–1994. History In the closing days of World War I, fighting broke out in Baku as a result of the Russian Civil War, with four groups fighting for control of the area when the Russian Empire collapsed. Fighting each other were the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Armenians and Azerbaijanis. Many people were killed in the fighting including some from a small British force sent to prevent Baku falling into the hands of the Russians. Baku Boulevard (, also known as National Park) is a promenade established in 1909 which runs parallel to Baku's seafront.
