National Black Police Association (United Kingdom)
The National Black Police Association (NBPA) is an interest group of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) staff of the UK police forces, founded in November 1999, which seeks to improve their working environment, to challenge racial prejudice and to enhance the quality of service to all non-white communities of the United Kingdom. The Association defines itself as follows: ″The objective of the National Black Police Association (NBPA) is to promote good race relations and equality of opportunity within the police services of the United Kingdom and the wider community. The NBPA works to place fairness at the heart of the Police Agenda. We do this by taking forward initiatives for the Progression of minority officers and staff; such as mentoring schemes, leadership programmes, women in policing projects supported by the National Institute for Leadership and Empowerment. Bedfordshire Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire in England, which includes the unitary authorities of Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton. Racism in the United Kingdom has a long history and includes structural discrimination and hostile attitudes against various ethnic minorities. The extent and the targets have varied over time. It has resulted in cases of discrimination, riots and racially motivated murders. Among the populations targeted historically and today have been Jews, who have experienced antisemitism for centuries; Irish people and other subsequent subjects of British colonialism; black people; Romani people; migrants; and refugees. Black People
Black is a racial classification of people, usually a political and skin color-based category for specific populations with a mid- to dark brown complexion. ''The Voice'', founded in 1982, is a British national African-Caribbean newspaper operating in the United Kingdom. The paper is based in London and was published every Thursday until 2019 when it became monthly. It is available in a paper version by subscription and also online. History ''The Voice'' was founded in 1982 by Val McCalla, who was working on a London local paper called the ''East End News'' in 1981. He and a group of businesspeople and journalists created a weekly newspaper to cater for the interests of British-born African-Caribbean people. Janet Hills
Janet Hills became president of the National Black Police Association (NBPA) in 2015-17. She was the first woman to be chair of the association in 2013. Her career in the London Metropolitan police force began at Brixton Police Station in 1991 and includes time in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Community Safety Unit and the Human Trafficking Unit. Leroy Logan
Leroy Hugh Logan is a former police superintendent in the UK. He was both a founding member of the Black Police Association and its chairman for 30 years. Logan left the Metropolitan Police at the rank of superintendent having been involved in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, the inquiry into the killing of Damilola Taylor and the organisation of the London 2012 Olympics. In 2020, Logan published his first book ''Closing Ranks, My Life as a Cop'' which described his time as a senior police officer in London. Metropolitan Black Police Association
The Metropolitan Black Police Association is a staff association in the United Kingdom which represents officers and staff in the Metropolitan Police who are black or Asian. The Met BPA was not subsumed into the National Black Police Association and has continued to exist as an independent staff association though it supports the NBPA. Purpose The strap line for the Met BPA is "Working to make changes for the better". Its declared aims are to "Improve the working environment of black police staff and officers within the Metropolitan Police Service".
