National Assembly (Lesotho)
The National Assembly () is the lower chamber of Lesotho's bicameral Parliament. Composition The current National Assembly has a total of 120 members. 80 members are elected in single member constituencies using the first-preference plurality (first-past-the-post) system. The remaining 40 members are elected through proportional representation and national party-lists. Members serve five-year terms. Tlohang Sekhamane is the current Speaker of the National Assembly. Maseru
Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho. It is also the capital of the Maseru District. Located on the Caledon River, Maseru lies directly on the Lesotho–South Africa border. Maseru had a population of 330,760 in the 2016 census. The city was established as a police camp and assigned as the capital after the country became a British protectorate in 1869. When the country achieved independence in 1966, Maseru retained its status as capital. The name of the city is a Sesotho word meaning "red sandstones". 2022 Lesotho General Election
General elections were held in Lesotho on 7 October 2022 to elect all 120 members of the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament. Background The previous general elections in 2017 were called after prime minister Pakalitha Mosisili lost a vote of no confidence. In the election, the All Basotho Convention (ABC), led by Tom Thabane, won 48 seats. The Democratic Congress (DC) led by Mosisili won 30 seats, the Lesotho Congress for Democracy party (LCD) secured 11 seats whilst numerous minor parties won 27. The ABC won three additional seats; however, the results of those constituencies were declared null and void due to the deaths of some candidates contesting those seats. Following the election, the ABC announced its intention to form coalition government with the Reformed Congress of Lesotho, the Alliance of Democrats and the Basotho National Party. Compensation (electoral Systems)
Compensation or correction is an optional mechanism of electoral systems, which corrects the results of one part of the system based on some criterion to achieve a certain result, usually to make it more proportional. There are in general two forms of compensation: vote linkage and seat linkage. Compensation exists in many ranked voting systems such as instant-runoff voting and single transferable voting, where votes for eliminated candidates (and in the case of STV, surplus votes of elected candidates) are transferred to other candidates, thereby compensating voters who voted for candidates who may not be elected (or whose votes were not needed to get a candidate elected). The Basotho Patriotic Party is a political party in Lesotho founded by Tefo Mapesela in May 2021 after leaving the All Basotho Convention. Mapesela, who was the Member of Parliament for the Mokhotlong constituency, lost his seat at the 2022 general election.
