Napoléon Charbonneau
Napoléon Charbonneau (February 12, 1853 – August 31, 1916) was a Canadian lawyer, judge, and politician. Born in Côte-des-Neiges, Canada East, the son of Augustin Charbonneau and Julienne Dufort, Charbonneau studied law in the office of Trudel and Taillon and was admitted to the bar in January 1879. He practiced civil and commercial law in Montreal and was in partnership for several years with Hormisdas Pelletier. He first ran as the Liberal candidate for the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Jacques Cartier in the 1887 election but was defeated. 1896 Canadian Federal Election
The 1896 Canadian federal election was held on June 23, 1896, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 8th Parliament of Canada. Though the Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister Charles Tupper, won a plurality of the popular vote, the Liberal Party, led by Wilfrid Laurier, won the majority of seats (with only 41 percent of the vote) to form the next government. The election ended 18 years of Conservative rule. This was first election in Canada to produce a House of Commons with elected members of four parties. Désiré Girouard
Désiré Girouard (July 7, 1836 – March 22, 1911) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Born in Saint-Timothée, Lower Canada (now part of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec), the son of Jérémie Girouard and Hyppolite Picard, he received his Bachelor of Civil Law from McGill University in 1860. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1860 and practiced law. In 1872 and 1874 he ran unsuccessfully for the House of Commons of Canada in the riding of the Quebec electoral districts of Jacques Cartier and Beauharnois as a Conservative, losing both times. He was elected by two votes in the 1878 election in the riding of Jacques Cartier. He was subsequently re-elected in 1882, 1887 and 1891. In 1892, he became the first mayor of Dorval, Quebec.
