Naples, Santa Barbara County, California
Naples is an unincorporated area in Santa Barbara County, California, United States on the south portion of the Gaviota Coast. Also known as Dos Pueblos Ranch, it is located on U.S. Highway 101 (California), U.S. Highway 101 west-northwest of Isla Vista, California, Isla Vista. Dos Pueblos refers to two Chumash villages that existed when in 1542 explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo wrote about seeing them. The villages of Kuya'mu and Mikiw were across the creek from each other. A subdivision map was filed to create a community but the parcels were not developed. Mikiw
Mikiw was a Native American village of the Chumash people located in the modern-day county of Santa Barbara, California in the United States. In 1602, the Sebastián Vizcaíno expedition stopped by the Goleta Valley and the nearby Chumash village of ''Mikiw''. The village was situated on the Pacific coast, at the site of the current Dos Pueblos in the present day city of Goleta, California. To its east, across the Dos Pueblos Creek, was the adjacent coastal village of Kuya'mu. The two settlements on either side of Dos Pueblos Creek, at the ocean's edge, undoubtedly impressed Crespi. In 1602, the Viscaino expedition stopped by the Goleta Valley and the nearby Chumash village of Mikiw, known today as Dos Pueblos . Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo
Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (; 1497 – January 3, 1543) was a Portuguese maritime explorer best known for investigations of the west coast of North America, undertaken on behalf of the Spanish Empire. He was the first European to explore present-day Alta California, navigating along the coast of California in 1542–1543 on his voyage from New Spain (modern Mexico). Nationality Cabrillo's nationality Spanish or Portuguese has been debated more recently. He was described as Portuguese by Spanish chronicler Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas; in his ''Historia General de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas y tierra firme del Mar Oceano'', written 60 years after Cabrillo's death, Herrera referred to Cabrillo as ''Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo''. The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection is a large private map collection with over 150,000 maps and cartographic items. The collection was created by David Rumsey who, after making his fortune in real estate, focused initially on collecting 18th- and 19th century maps of North and South America, as this era "saw the rise of modern cartography." After 2004 Rumsey expanded the collection to include maps from the 16th through 21st centuries, covering more of the world. Gaviota Coast
The Gaviota Coast in Santa Barbara County, California is a rural coastline along the Santa Barbara Channel roughly bounded by Goleta Point on the south and the north boundary of the county on the north. This last undeveloped stretch of Southern California coastline consists of dramatic bluffs, isolated beaches and terraced grasslands.
