Naomh Abán GAA
Naomh Abán GAA is a Gaelic football club based in the Gaeltacht village of Baile Bhuirne, County Cork, Ireland. It participates in games of the Muskerry division of the Cork GAA. The club has experienced senior grade football within Cork county for many years. It now participates in the Premier Intermediate grade. The club has contributed a number of players to the Cork Gaelic football team. These have included Anthony Lynch, Mícheál Cronin, Gerry Lucey, Gerry Lynch, Mick Scannell, Peadar Healy, and Coleman Twomey. Naomh Abán GAA fields underage boys and girls teams and also has an adult ladies team. The club does not field any hurling teams. The ladies team won the All-Ireland Intermediate title in 2003 making it the most successful team in the history of Naomh Abán. In 2021, Tomás ‘Tiktok’ Keane made his debut for the senior team. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. Diarmuid McCarthy
Diarmuid McCarthy (1956 – 9 July 2022) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played at club level with Naomh Abán and Muskerry and at inter-county level with the Cork senior football team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career McCarthy first played Gaelic football at juvenile and underage levels with Naomh Abán. He was just 17-years-old when he was part of the club's adult team that won the Cork JFC title in 1973 before later winning a Cork IFC title in 1977. His performances at club level also earned inclusion on the Muskerry divisional team. McCarthy first appeared on the inter-county scene during a two-year tenure with the Cork minor football team. He was at centre-forward when Cork beat Mayo in the 1974 All-Ireland minor final. He also spent two years with the Cork under-21 team. McCarthy made his senior team debut during the 1982 Munster SFC. Peadar Healy
Peadar Healy (born 1963) is a former Irish Gaelic football manager and former player. He was the manager of the Cork senior team from 2015 to 2017 Born in Ballyvourney, County Cork, Healy was introduced to Gaelic football at a young age. He enjoyed success at schools' level while simultaneously enjoying championship successes in minor and under-21 divisional grades with the Naomh Abán club. Healy also won a championship medal in the junior grade. Healy made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team. An All-Ireland medallist in this grade, he also won an All-Ireland medal as a non-playing substitute with the under-21 team. Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is an annual All Ireland Gaelic football competition contested by clubs from the Irish language-speaking Gaeltacht areas of Ireland. Clubs compete on a county-basis at first, in order to qualify for the tournament that is hosted by a different club from the Gaeltacht each year. The first competition was held in Gweedore, County Donegal in 1969 and was won by the local club CLG Ghaoth Dobhair. RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta provides radio coverage of both the regional qualifiers and the national finals, held over the June Bank Holiday. The Mid Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Ross Oil Junior A Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Muskerry Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1926 for junior Gaelic football teams in the Muskerry region in County Cork, Ireland. The series of games begin in April, with the championship culminating with the final in the autumn. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The Mid Cork Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Football Championship. The Cork Under-21 Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition in County Cork, Ireland for players under the age of 21. Clubs affiliated to Cork board compete to win this championship. The Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Football Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAFC) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fifth tier overall in the entire Cork football championship system. Anthony Lynch (Gaelic Footballer)
Anthony Lynch (born 21 August 1977 in Ballyvourney, County Cork) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays Gaelic football with his local club Naomh Abán and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1999 to 2011. Playing career Club Lynch plays his club football with his local club called Naomh Abán in Ballyvourney. Lynch first came to prominence as a member of the club's underage teams. After the minor grade, he quickly joined the under-21 team. In 1995 Naomh Abán won their divisional championship and subsequently reached the final of the county under-21 championship. The opponents on that occasion were Mallow and a close game developed. At the full-time whistle the victory went to Mallow, as their ability to score goals clinched a 2–9 to 0–12 win.
