Nanaimo—Cowichan—The Islands
Nanaimo—Cowichan—The Islands was a federal electoral district—also known as a "riding"—in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1962 to 1979. This riding was created in 1962 from Nanaimo. The 1966 electoral redistribution saw this riding gain territory from Metchosin and lose territory in the northern end toward the Englishman River. This riding was dissolved into Cowichan—Malahat—The Islands and Nanaimo—Alberni in 1979. Nanaimo was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1979. This riding was created as Nanaimo riding in 1903 from parts of Vancouver and Victoria ridings. Its legal description when it was created was: "The electoral district of Nanaimo, comprising the provincial electoral districts of Cowichan, Esquimalt, Nanaimo City, Newcastle, Saanich and The Islands." Metchosin, British Columbia
The District of Metchosin () is a municipality and community in Greater Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is a coastal community adjacent to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Metchosin is part of the Western Communities and one of the 13 regional municipalities. The origin of its name is a Straits Salish word, ''smets-shosin'', meaning "place of stinking fish" or "place smelling of fish oil." History Following the establishment of farms by the Puget Sound Agricultural Company in the Victoria area, independent settlers entered the Metchosin area. Englishman River ( Halkomelem: K̓wal̓uxw) is a river in the eastern side of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Thomas Clement Douglas (20 October 1904 – 24 February 1986) was a Scottish-born Canadian politician who served as the seventh premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and leader of the New Democratic Party from 1961 to 1971. Colin Cameron (September 28, 1896 – July 28, 1968) was a Canadian politician who represented the electoral districts of Nanaimo from 1953 to 1958 and Nanaimo—Cowichan—The Islands from 1962 to 1968 in the House of Commons of Canada. This is a list of Canada's 343 federal electoral districts (commonly referred to as '' ridings'' in Canadian English) as defined by the ''2023 Representation Order''. Canadian federal electoral districts are constituencies that elect members of Parliament to the House of Commons of Canada every election. Provincial electoral districts often have names similar to their local federal counterpart but usually have different geographic boundaries. Canadians elected members for each federal electoral district most recently in the 2025 federal election on April 28, 2025.
