NY 283 (1930–1970)
New York State Route 283 (NY 283) is an east–west state highway in Jefferson County, New York, in the United States. It extends for as a two-lane road from an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11), NY 3, and NY 12 in downtown Watertown to a junction with NY 342 in the town of Le Ray. The route passes through mostly rural areas, with the exception of a dense commercial district around the highway's west end. NY 283 is one of three routes directly connecting Watertown's Public Square to Fort Drum; the others are US 11 and NY 3, which loosely parallel NY 283 between the two locations. The portion of the route outside of the Watertown city limits was originally maintained by Jefferson County as part of County Route 52 (CR 52), a highway extending from Watertown to Felts Mills. Pamelia, New York
Pamelia is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 3,160 at the 2010 census, up from 2,897 in 2000. The town was named for Pamelia Williams, wife of landowner and developer General Jacob J. Brown. Pamelia is in the north-central part of the county and is north of Watertown. History The town was first permanently settled ''circa'' 1804. The town was formed in 1819 from part of the town of Brownville. Around 1824, the name was briefly changed to "Leander", but was then changed back to "Pamelia". A small part of the town of Orleans was added to Pamelia in 1824. A reference route is an unsigned highway assigned by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to roads that possess a signed name (mainly parkways), that NYSDOT has determined are too minor to have a signed touring route number, or are former touring routes that are still state-maintained. The majority of reference routes are owned by the state of New York and maintained by NYSDOT; however, some exceptions exist. The reference route designations are normally posted on reference markers, small green signs located every tenth-mile on the side of the road, though a few exceptions exist to this practice as well. These designations are not signed like other highways on normal reassurance marker road signs for drivers to see clearly, with four exceptions. Calcium, New York
Calcium is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 3,573 as of the 2020 census. The CDP is in the town of Le Ray and includes the hamlets of Calcium and Sanfords Four Corners. Historic landmarks include the stone house at the intersection of State Route 342 and County Route 138 that once served as the post office for the area, and the Calcium Community Church at the same intersection. The church was built in 1853 by a group of at least three different denominations, including Methodist Episcopal, Christian, and Unitarian.
