NPIA
The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) was a non-departmental public body in the United Kingdom, established to support police by providing expertise in such areas as information technology, information sharing, and recruitment. It was announced in December 2011 that the NPIA would be gradually wound down and its functions transferred to other organisations. By December 2012, all operations had been transferred to the Home Office, the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and the newly established College of Policing. SOCA was itself replaced by the National Crime Agency on 7 October 2013 as a feature of the Crime and Courts Act 2013, which also formally abolished the NPIA. Peter Neyroud
Peter William Neyroud CBE QPM (born 12 August 1959) is a retired British police officer. He was the Chief Executive Officer for the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA), and former Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police. Hannounced his retirementfrom the NPIA in March 2010. Neyroud was educated at Winchester College and Oriel College, Oxford, where he studied Modern History. He holds an MSc in Professional Studies (Crime and Policing), a diploma in Applied Criminology and a PhD in Criminology (Wolfson College, Cambridge: 2018). Peter Neyroud joined Hampshire Constabulary in 1980, rising through the ranks within Hampshire to Detective Superintendent. Centrex (police Training Agency)
Centrex, the common name of the Central Police Training and Development Authority (CPTDA), was established under Part 4 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, and was the primary means of police training in England and Wales. It was based at Bramshill House, formerly known as the Police Staff College, Bramshill. Centrex had the responsibility for many aspects of police training and development. There had been a move away from running police training centres to running police trainee/initial probationer courses in-house under the auspices of Centrex. Serious Organised Crime Agency
The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) was a non-departmental public body of the Government of the United Kingdom which existed from 1 April 2006 until 7 October 2013. SOCA was a national law enforcement agency with Home Office sponsorship, established as a body corporate under Section 1 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. It operated within the United Kingdom and collaborated (through its network of international offices) with many foreign law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Police Staff College, Bramshill
The Police Staff College, Bramshill, Bramshill House, Bramshill, (near Hook) Hampshire, England, was until 2015 the principal police staff training establishment in England and Wales. History The need for a training college for the police was pushed heavily by Sir Frank Newsam, who was the second most senior Home Office civil servant in the immediate post-war years. Sir Harold Scott, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in the late 1940s, also called for the establishment for such a college and it was established in June 1948 as the National Police College (taking its present name in 1979). The National Police Library was also established in 1948 and is still in existence, located in Ryton-on-Dunsmore. Police Information Technology Organisation
The Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) was an arm's length body of the UK government. It replaced the Police Information Systems Unit (PISU) of the Home Office, which initially ran the UK government Police National Computer (PNC) project. The PNC project itself was evolved in the early 1970s, and was launched in 1974 with 'Stolen Vehicles' as its initial database. The primary site of PISU and later PITO was the Hendon Data Centre, proximate to the Metropolitan Police Training Centre, but latterly other sites were used. The College of Policing is a professional body for the police in England and Wales. It was established in 2012 to take over a number of training and development roles that were the responsibility of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA). The National Police Library was also transferred from the NPIA at that time. The college is an arm's length body of the Home Office. The college is based in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Warwickshire. Nicholas "Nick" Gargan is a former Chief Constable in England, who now runs his own consultancy company, Nick Gargan Consulting. He was appointed Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary in March 2013, and immediately embarked upon an ambitious, and (in some quarters) controversial programme of reform. In May 2014 he was suspended because of allegations made by whistleblowers of inappropriate behaviour and comments towards female officers and staff. Assets Recovery Agency
The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) was a non-ministerial government department in the United Kingdom. It was established under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA) to reduce crime by confiscating the proceeds of any crime. It was granted a new power of civil recovery through the High Court, and could also take over the powers of the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to levy tax without identifying a source for taxed income. The ARA became operational in February 2003, but it failed to meet its targets for the confiscation of criminal funds. It was announced in January 2007 that it would be merged with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), which was established in 2006.
