''Mistress'' is a stand-alone James Patterson James Brendan Patterson (born March 22, 1947) is an American author. Plot Ben Casper is the central character of this novel. The novel is written in the first person from Ben's point of view. Ben has an obsession with recalling trivia that continually sidetracks his thoughts. At the beginning of the book his friend Diana Hotchkiss appears to commit suicide, but the more Ben looks into it, the more it looks like murder. When Ben starts looking too much into this, some group then repeatedly tries to kill him and those associated with him. Thriller is a genre of fiction, having numerous, often overlapping subgenres. Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.
