Minneapolis City Council
The Minneapolis City Council is the lawmaking body of Minneapolis. It consists of 13 members, elected from separate wards to four-year terms, via a ranked-choice method. The council structure has been in place since the 1950s. In recent elections, council membership has been dominated by the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). As of 2022, 12 members identified with the DFL, while one identified with Democratic Socialists of America. Until the 2021 Minneapolis City Council election, the city's government structure was considered a Weak mayor, weak-mayor, strong-council system. However, a charter amendment was passed that gave the mayor more power and reduced the council to purely legislative duties. History The city has never had more than 13 wards, but at one time there were three representatives from each area, for a total of 39 members of the City Council. 2021 Minneapolis City Council Election
The 2021 Minneapolis City Council election was held on November 2, 2021, to elect the members of the Minneapolis City Council. The candidate filing period was from July 27 to August 10. Retiring members DFL * Alondra Cano, Ward 9 * Lisa Bender, Ward 10 Candidates Electoral system The 13 members of the City Council are elected from single-member districts via instant-runoff voting, commonly known as ranked choice voting. Voters have the option of ranking up to three candidates in order of preference. Municipal elections in Minnesota are officially nonpartisan, although candidates are able to identify with a political party on the ballot. Write-in candidates must file a request with the Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services Division for votes for them to be counted.
