The Minister of the Interior ( is, Innanríkisráðherra) was the head of Iceland's Ministry of the Interior ( is, Innanríkisráðuneyti Íslands) from 2011 to 2017. The Ministry of the Interior was created on 1 January 2011 as the result of the merger of two ministries, those of '' Justice and Human Rights'' and ''Transport, Communications and Local Government''. In the cabinet of Bjarni Benediktsson, formed on 11 January 2017 following the 2016 parliamentary election, the Ministry of the Interior initially still existed as an umbrella ministry for two ministers, the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Transport and Local Government. On 1 May 2017, the Ministry of the Interior was formally dissolved and split into the two new ministries of Justice () and Transport and Local Government (). Independence Party (Iceland)
The Independence Party ( is, Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) is a liberal-conservative political party in Iceland. It is currently the largest party in the Alþingi, with 17 seats. The chairman of the party is Bjarni Benediktsson and the vice chairman of the party is Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir. It was formed in 1929 through a merger of the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. This united the two parties advocating the dissolution of the Union of Denmark and Iceland; dissolution was achieved in 1944, during the German occupation of Denmark. Since its formation in 1929, the party has won the largest share of the vote in every election except the 2009 election, when it fell behind the Social Democratic Alliance. Ólöf Nordal (3 December 1966 – 8 February 2017) was an Icelandic politician who was the Minister of the Interior of Iceland from 4 December 2014 to 11 January 2017. She died on 8 February 2017. She was a member of the Independence Party. Early life Ólöf graduated from Reykjavík Upper Secondary School in 1986. She received a law degree from the University of Iceland in 1994 and an MBA from Reykjavík University in 2002. Career Ólöf worked as a teacher, lawyer, and in the administration prior to entering politics. She served as a department head in the Ministry of Transport and Communications from 1996 through 1999. The Progressive Party ( is, Framsóknarflokkurinn, FSF) is an agrarian political party in Iceland. For most of its history, the Progressive Party has governed with the Independence Party. Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson (; born 12 March 1975) is an Icelandic politician who was the prime minister of Iceland from May 2013 until April 2016. He was also chairman of the Progressive Party from 2009 to October 2016. He was elected to the Althing (Iceland's parliament) as the 8th member for the Reykjavík North Constituency on 25 April 2009. He has represented the Northeast Constituency as its 1st member since 27 April 2013. Taking office at 38, he was the youngest Icelander to become prime minister.
