Minister Mentor
Minister Mentor was a position in the Cabinet of Singapore created in 2004 as part of a transition in political leadership. The only person to hold the post, between 2004 and 2011, was Lee Kuan Yew. Background On 12 August 2004, when Lee Hsien Loong succeeded Goh Chok Tong as the prime minister of Singapore, he announced the position of Minister Mentor, as part of a transition of political leadership, when naming his Cabinet. Prior to Lee Kuan Yew's appointment as Minister Mentor, he was Senior Minister between 1990 and 2004, under Goh Chok Tong's Cabinet. Goh was subsequently appointed Senior Minister under Lee Hsien Loong's Cabinet, when he stepped down as prime minister. In Westminster and other parliamentary systems, a backbencher is a member of parliament (MP) or a legislator who occupies no governmental office and is not a frontbench spokesperson in the Opposition, being instead simply a member of the "rank and file". The term dates from 1855. The term derives from the fact that they sit physically behind the frontbench in the House of Commons. The Parliament of Singapore is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Singapore, which governs the country alongside the president of Singapore. 2011 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day. This election also marked the first and the only three-cornered fight since 2001 in Punggol East SMC before it increased to four-cornered fight on a by-election held two years later. First Lee Hsien Loong Cabinet
The First Cabinet of Lee Hsien Loong of the Government of Singapore was sworn into office on 12 Aug 2004. The swearing-in ceremony was held outdoors on the Istana grounds—instead of City Hall where his two predecessors Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong held their ceremonies— in order to accommodate 1,400 invited guests representing different demographics of the population. Goh Chok Tong (; born 20 May 1941) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Prime Minister of Singapore between 1990 and 2004, and Secretary-General of the People's Action Party between 1992 and 2004.
