Midlands–North-West (European Parliament Constituency)
Midlands–North-West is a constituency of the European Parliament in Ireland. It elects four Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV). History and boundaries The Constituency Commission proposed in its 2013 report that at the next European Parliament election a new constituency called Midlands–North-West be created, consisting of the old North-West constituency, with the exception of County Clare which was moved to the South constituency; as well the northern and central Leinster part of the East constituency. The report proposed changes to the constituencies of Ireland so as to reduce the total number of MEPs from 12 to 11, due to the accession of Croatia to the European Union. County Monaghan
County Monaghan ( ; ga, Contae Mhuineacháin) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Ulster and is part of Border strategic planning area of the Northern and Western Region. East was a constituency of the European Parliament in Ireland. It elected 3 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV). History and boundaries The constituency was created for the 2004 election and was a successor to the Leinster constituency. From 2004 to 2009, it comprised the Leinster counties excluding the Dublin constituency. For the 2009 election, the counties of Longford and Westmeath were transferred from East to the North-West constituency. It then comprised the counties Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Wexford and Wicklow. North-West was a constituency of the European Parliament in Ireland in from 2004 to 2014. It elected 3 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV). History and boundaries The constituency was created in 2004 and was a successor to the Connacht–Ulster constituency. For 2004 election, County Clare was moved from the Munster constituency to the new North-West constituency. For the 2009 election the counties of Longford and Westmeath were transferred from the East constituency to North-West. From 2009 it comprised the counties of Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath; and the city of Galway. It elects 5 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). 2019 European Parliament Election In Ireland
The 2019 European Parliament election in Ireland is the Irish component of the 2019 European Parliament election and was held on Friday, 24 May 2019, on the same day as the 2019 local elections and a referendum easing restrictions on divorce. The election was conducted in three constituencies under the single transferable vote (STV). Thirteen MEPs were elected, but the last candidate elected in both Dublin and South did not take their seats until after Brexit on 31 January 2020. Constituency changes The United Kingdom invoked Article 50 to withdraw from the European Union on 29 March 2017 following the 2016 referendum to leave the European Union. As Article 50 has a two-year period for withdrawal, the United Kingdom would not be part of the 2019 European Parliament election scheduled for May 2019.
