Michael Birt (biochemist)
Lindsay Michael Birt, AO, CBE (18 January 193228 October 2001) was the inaugural vice-chancellor of the University of Wollongong between 1975 and 1980, and the fourth vice-chancellor of the University of New South Wales between 1981 and 1992. Biography Michael Birt was born on 18 January 1932 in Melbourne, Australia. He was educated at Melbourne Boys High School and the University of Melbourne, where he completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, a Bachelor of Science and a PhD in biochemistry. In 1960, Birt returned to the University of Melbourne taking up the position of lecturer and then senior lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry. In 1967 he was invited to become the inaugural chair and head of the Australian National University Department of Biochemistry, where he remained until his appointment in 1973 as vice-chancellor designate at the Wollongong University College. Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. The Monarch of Australia is sovereign head of the order, while the Governor-General of Australia is the principal companion/dame/knight (as relevant at the time) and chancellor of the order. The governor-general's official secretary, Paul Singer (appointed August 2018), is secretary of the order. Appointments are made by the governor-general on behalf of the Monarch of Australia, based on recommendations made by the Council of the Order of Australia. Rupert Myers
Sir Rupert Horace Myers, (21 February 1921 – 21 February 2019) was an Australian metallurgist, academic and university administrator, who was the third vice-chancellor of the University of New South Wales from 1969 to 1981. He was the second person to be awarded a PhD by an Australian University. He died on 21 February 2019 on his 98th birthday. Honours In the New Year Honours of 1976, Myers was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his work as Vice-Chancellor of the University of New South Wales.
