Meulaboh
Meulaboh (Jawi alphabet, Jawoë: ملابوه; or ''Moulabouh'') is the capital of West Aceh Regency, Indonesia. Geography Meulaboh is about 245 km southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province. Meulaboh is located in the western part of Sumatra island. 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake event "The casualty rates in Meulaboh defy imagination," said Aitor Lacomba, Indonesian director of aid group International Rescue Committee. Baitul Makmur Meulaboh Grand Mosque ( id, Masjid Agung Baitul Makmur Meulaboh) is the largest mosque in the western coast of Meulaboh, Aceh, Indonesia. Architecture The mosque has an architectural style of combination between Arabic, Indian and Acehnese as well as a selection of bright brown colors combined with red brick on the dome of the mosque. West Aceh Regency
West Aceh Regency ( id, Kabupaten Aceh Barat) is a Regencies of Indonesia, regency in the Aceh special region of Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency currently covers an area of 2,927.95 square kilometres and had a population of 173,558 at the 2010 Census and 198,736 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2021 was 200,579. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake
An earthquake and a tsunami, known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community, the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, occurred at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7) on 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an undersea megathrust earthquake that registered a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 , reaching a Mercalli intensity up to IX in certain areas. The earthquake was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma Plate and the Indian Plate. A series of massive tsunami waves grew up to high once heading inland, after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore. Calang ( Jawoë: چالڠ), the capital of the Aceh Jaya Regency of the special territory (''daerah istimewa'') of Aceh was on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It had a population of about 12,000 though it was reported to have ''"vanished completely leaving only scattered shards of concrete"'' as a result of the tsunami produced by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Only about 30 per cent of the townspeople have survived. The trail of destruction left by the tsunami extends two kilometers inland from the coast. Whole hills have been washed away. The township, a former Indonesian Military (TNI, ''Tentara Nasional Indonesia'') stronghold, will be relocated inland according to Indonesian Welfare Minister Alwi Shihab.
