Merri River
The Merri River, a perennial river of the Glenelg Hopkins catchment, is located in the Western District of Victoria, Australia. Course and features Formed by the confluence of the Spring Creek and Drysdale Creek, to the east of Grassmere. It flows generally south joined by two minor tributaries before reaching its mouth and emptying into Stingray Bay, part of the Southern Ocean, near the city of Warrnambool. The river descends over its course. Spring Creek starts to the east of Penshurst, just north of the Hamilton Highway while Drysdale Creek starts near the Woolsthorpe-Hexham Road. Etymology The river derives its name from an Aboriginal word meaning "rocky". Perennial River
A perennial stream is a stream that has continuous flow of surface water throughout the year in at least parts of its catchment during seasons of normal rainfall, Water Supply Paper 494. as opposed to one whose flow is intermittent. In the absence of irregular, prolonged or extreme drought, a perennial stream is a watercourse, or segment, element or emerging body of water which continually delivers groundwater. For example, an artificial disruption of stream, variability in flow or stream selection associated with the activity in hydropower installations, do not affect this status. Perennial streams do not include stagnant water ( pools and waterholes), reservoirs, cutoff lakes and ponds that persist throughout the year. Middle Island (Warrnambool)
Middle Island is a small (c. 2 ha), rocky island lying close to the shore of south-western Victoria, Australia, in Stingray Bay next to the city of Warrnambool. It is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to breeding colonies of little penguins (''Eudyptula minor'') and short-tailed shearwaters (''Ardenna tenuirostris''). It is closed to general public access because of the low penguin population. Maremma Project Because of the proximity of the island to the coast, it is accessible at low tide to predators such as foxes (''Vulpes vulpes'') and stray dogs. As a result, the penguin colony declined to a low of ten breeding pairs by 2005. In 2006 an attempt began to protect the birds from foxes by the use of Maremma Sheepdogs trained to protect penguins rather than sheep and to act as a deterrent to foxes. Warrnambool ( Maar: ''Peetoop'' or ''Wheringkernitch'' or ''Warrnambool'') is a city on the south-western coast of Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 census, Warrnambool had a population of 35,743.
