Meranti Islands Regency
Meranti Islands is a regency (''kabupaten'') of Riau Province, and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 3,707.84 km2, and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census, 180,946 at the 2015 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census. Administrative districts When created, the regency was divided into five districts (''kecamatan''), listed below with their populations at the 2010 Census: On 26 January 2011 the regency was re-divided into nine districts. Selat Panjang
Selat Panjang ( Jawi: ; ) is the capital of Kepulauan Meranti Regency, which is part of the province of Riau in Indonesia. The regency is a new regency in Riau province which was established in 2009 after being separated from Bengkalis Regency. The city is located on Tebing Tinggi Island, which is separated by a narrow channel from Sumatra, and across the Strait of Malacca from Singapore. People Selat Panjang has a dense population of about 120,000 people. The largest ethnic group is Chinese, and almost all of them adhere to Buddhism and Taoism. Around 37% of the population are ethnic Malay. There are also smaller ethnic groups such as Tamils, Minangkabau and Javanese. Regency (Indonesia)
A regency ( id, kabupaten), sometimes incorrectly referred to as a district, is an administrative division of Indonesia, directly under a province and on the same level with city (''kota''). Regencies is divided into districts (''Kecamatan'', ''Distrik'' in Papua region, or ''Kapanewon'' in the Special Region of Yogyakarta). The English name "regency" comes from the Dutch colonial period, when regencies were ruled by ''bupati'' (or regents) and were known as ''regentschap'' in Dutch (''kabupaten'' in Javanese and subsequently Indonesian). ''Bupati'' had been regional lords under the precolonial monarchies of Java. When the Dutch abolished or curtailed those monarchies, the bupati were left as the most senior indigenous authority.
