Mensalão Scandal
The Mensalão scandal ( pt, Escândalo do Mensalão, ) was a major parliamentary vote-buying scandal by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration that threatened to bring down his government in 2005. ''Mensalão'' is a neologism, a variant of the word for "big monthly payment" (''salário mensal'' or ''mensalidade''). The scandal broke on June 6, 2005 when Brazilian deputy Roberto Jefferson ( Brazilian Labour Party) told the ''Folha de S.Paulo'' newspaper that the ruling Workers' Party (PT) had paid a number of deputies 30,000 reais (around US$12,000 at the time) a month to vote for legislation favored by the ruling party. The funds allegedly came from state-owned companies' advertising budgets, funneled through an advertising agency owned by Marcos Valério. José Dirceu
José Dirceu (; born March 16, 1946), in full José Dirceu de Oliveira e Silva, is a former Brazilians, Brazilian politician. His political rights were suspended by the Brazilian House of Representatives and he was found guilty by the Brazilian Supreme Court of active corruption and conspiracy in two separate lawsuits. He participated in an armed revolutionary group after the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état, and was exiled in 1969. He returned in 1980 and was politically active, culminating in a post as chief-of-staff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration from 2003 until his resignation due to corruption charges. Early life Dirceu moved to São Paulo in 1961 and in 1966 joined the ''Ala Marighella'', later called the Ação Libertadora Nacional, ALN, a revolutionary armed group linked to the Brazilian Communist Party. Delcídio do Amaral Gomez (born February 2, 1955) is a Brazilian politician. He worked at Shell and was nominated to Petrobras's Internacional Directory by president Fernando Henrique Cardoso where he worked until 2001 when he left Petrobras and start his relation with the Workers'Part Before his relation with Workers' party, Delcidio indicated a new director to Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Nestor Cervero. Delúbio Soares
Delúbio Soares de Castro (Buriti Alegre, November 6, 1955) is a Brazilian trade unionist who has had a long professional association with the Brazilian Workers Party (PT). He is particularly noted for his involvement in the mensalão scandal. Background A native of Goiás, Soares graduated with a degree in mathematics from the Catholic University of Goias. The Public Prosecutor's Office ( pt, Ministério Público, lit.
