This is a list of members of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1 January 1890 to 31 December 1899. Appointments, made by the Governor of Queensland, were for life, although many members for one reason or another resigned. The chamber increased in size from 38 to 41 members on 23 August 1894. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England. Absenteeism was a problem in the early years, with some members returning to England, being absent for several years. Thomas Bridson Cribb
Thomas Bridson Cribb (1 December 1845 – 4 September 1913) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Thomas Bridson Cribb was born on 1 December 1845 in London, England, the son of Benjamin Cribb and his wife Elizabeth (née Bridson). He immigrated with his parents on the ''Chaseley'' arriving in Moreton Bay in May 1849. He was educated privately and was one of the foundation scholars at Ipswich Boys' Grammar School. He was a partner in the family retail business, Cribb & Foote On 3 June 1874, he married Marian Lucy Foote, daughter of John Clarke Foote (his father's business partner in Cribb & Foote). John Heussler
Johann Christian (John) Heussler (1820–1907) was a businessman and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Johann Christian Heussler was born at Bockenheim, Frankfurt, Germany on 15 June 1820. He was educated at the state school, and was subsequently a student at a French institution at Bockenheim, and Dr. Jeiteles's Mercantile Institute at Frankfurt. He entered in business as a wine merchant at Frankfurt, and later on, while still young, received an important appointment in a mercantile firm in Holland, representing the firm at the London Exhibition in 1851. He emigrated to Australia in 1852, and established a business, in partnership with others, in Melbourne. Business interests Due to poor health he moved to Brisbane 1854 and established the mercantile firm Heussler and Co. Frederick Hart (politician)
Frederick Hamilton Scott Hart (26 March 1836 – 15 July 1915) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Hart was born in Madras, India in 1836 to William Hamilton Hart and his wife Fanny (Lloyd). His family moved to Australia in 1843 and he was educated at various schools including The King's School, Parramatta before returning to England for four years. In 1853 he travelled back to Australia and worked for his father's mercantile firm, Bright Bros. Hart was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in 1872, and served for over forty three years until his death in 1915. He married Harriett Isabel Blanche Horsley and together they had seven children. Augustus Gregory
Sir Augustus Charles Gregory (1 August 1819 – 25 June 1905) was an English-born Australian explorer and surveyor. Between 1846 and 1858 he undertook four major expeditions. He was the first Surveyor-General of Queensland. He was appointed a lifetime Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early years Augustus Charles Gregory was born at Farnsfield, Nottingham, England. He was the second of five brothers born to Joshua Gregory and Frances Churchman. George Wilkie Gray
George Wilkie Gray (3 August 1844 – 22 September 1924) was a businessman, and member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Gray was born in Sydney to Alexander Gray, a licensed victualler, and his wife Margaret (née Hall). William Graham (Queensland Politician)
William Graham was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Politics William Graham was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Darling Downs at a by-election on 23 March 1875. He held the seat until 26 November 1878 when he made a last-minute decision to not contest the 1878 election. Graham was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council on 5 August 1880. Being a lifetime appointment, he served until his death on 7 June 1892. Personal life Graham married Louisa Elizabeth Turner on 9 January 1864 in Brisbane. Angus Gibson
Angus Gibson (1842–1920) was a sugar planter and politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Political life Angus Gibson was a member of Gooburrum Divisional Board and its chairman in 1888. From 1895 to 1900, he was a member of the Kolan Divisional Board from 1895 to 1900. James Garrick
Sir James Francis Garrick, , (10 January 1836 – 12 January 1907), was a politician and agent-general from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In his later years, he lived in London. Early years Garrick was the second oldest of ten children of James Francis Garrick (b. 1803 in Deptford, Kent, England; d. 1874 in Sydney) and Catherine Eliza Garrick (''née'' Branson, b. 1811 in Gibraltar; d. 1900 in Woollahra, Australia). His parents were married on 10 June 1832 in St Martin-in-the-Fields, Surrey, England. They subsequently emigrated to Sydney to manage a flour milling business. William Forrest (Australian Politician)
William Forrest (11 January 1835 – 23 April 1903) was an Australian pastoralist, company director and politician, a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Forrest was born in Ballykelly, County Londonderry, Ireland, educated privately and studied at Glasgow. Forrest arrived in Melbourne aboard the ''Ravenscraig'' in December 1853 and moved to Queensland in 1860. Forrest was a member of the Queensland firm of B. D. Morehead & Co. Forrest was appointed a member of the Legislative Council on 15 March 1883, holding this position until his death on 23 April 1903. Edward Barrow Forrest
Edward Barrow Forrest (February 1838 – 30 March 1914) was an Australian company director and politician, a member of the Queensland Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Forrest was born in Windermere, Westmorland, England. He was brought to Sydney in 1852 where educated by his uncle Rev. William Forrest at The King's School, Parramatta, New South Wales. Business interests Forrest's first position was with the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, with which he remained connected throughout most of his life, being for many years their Queensland director. In 1872 he came to Brisbane to work for the firm of Parbury, Lamb & Co., rising to be managing partner in Queensland. John Clark Foote
John Clarke Foote (1822–1895) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life John Clarke Foote was born on 10 July 1822 in Calne, Wiltshire, England, the son of Joseph Foote (a hat maker) and his wife Elizabeth (née Clarke). In January 1848, his father Joseph emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) as an agent of the Van Dieman's Land Colonial Mission Society and was appointed the resident Independent minister at Richmond within a few weeks of his arrival. Unfortunately, on 10 September 1848 Joseph died after being seized with an apoplectic fit while preaching the divine service. John immigrated with his mother Elizabeth, his wife Mary Ann, his brother James Foote and 3 sisters, Clarissa, Lucy and Harriet on the ''Emigrant'' arriving in Moreton Bay on 12 August 1850.
