Mel, Italy
Mel was a ''comune'' (municipality) in the province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about north of Venice and about southwest of Belluno and about northeast of Feltre. Overview The territory of Mel is home to the medieval Zumelle Castle. The present configuration of the castle dates back to 1311, although the site was in use as a military fortification since the Roman era. Other sights include the Palazzo Zorzi (16th century, now the Town Hall) and the Palazzo delle Contesse (17th century), which houses an archaeological museum with remains from a Veneti Iron Age necropolis found outside the town. Zumelle Castle
Zumelle Castle is a castle near the village of Tiago in the municipality of Borgo Valbelluna, province of Belluno, northern-eastern Italy. Nearby the castle is the early medieval church of San Donato, of Lombard origins. History The first fortification on the site existed perhaps as early as , when the Romans were consolidating their hold in the , conquered in the first century BCE. This fortification sat on a strategical location, commanding the road coming from the plain through the Praderadego, which has been identified as the Via Claudia Augusta Altinatis – or more likely, one of its side branches.
