Maurine Dorneles Gonçalves (born 14 January 1986), commonly known as Maurine, is a Brazilian former footballer who played as a defender or midfielder for the Brazil women's national team. Due to her versatility, she operated in a number of different positions throughout her career, but was most often used as a full-back or defensive midfielder. She was part of Brazil's silver medal-winning squad at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and also played at the 2011 and 2015 editions of the FIFA Women's World Cup, as well as the 2012 London Olympics. At club level Maurine enjoyed three spells with Santos and was hurt when the male parent club disbanded the female section in 2012. She also spent part of the 2011 season with American Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) franchise Western New York Flash. Maurine Karagianis (born August 17, 1950) is a Canadian politician, formerly the New Democratic Party MLA for the riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. She was first elected in the 2005 election to the constituency of Esquimalt-Metchosin, garnering almost 50 percent of votes cast and 2,895 more votes than the next closest candidate. She was re-elected in 2009 to the new constituency of Esquimalt-Royal Roads and again in 2013. In August 2007, Karagianis was appointed the Official Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Transportation in New Democrat leader Carole James' shadow cabinet. She had previously served as the Official Opposition Critic for the Ministry Children and Family Development, and, prior to that, the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue. Maurine Neuberger-Solomon, best known as Maurine Neuberger (née Brown; January 9, 1907February 22, 2000) was an American politician who served as a United States senator for the State of Oregon from November 1960 to January 1967. She was the fourth woman elected to the United States Senate and the tenth woman to serve in the body. She and her husband, Richard L. Neuberger, are regarded as the Senate's first husband-and-wife legislative team. To date, she is the only woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Oregon. Early life Neuberger was born in Cloverdale, Tillamook County, Oregon. Maurine Dallas Watkins (July 27, 1896? – August 10, 1969) was an American playwright and screenwriter. Early in her career, she briefly worked as a journalist covering the courthouse beat for the ''Chicago Tribune''. This experience gave her the material for her most famous piece of work, the stage play, ''Chicago'' (1926), which was eventually adapted into the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name, which was then made into a successful movie in 2002 that won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Watkins was born in Kentucky and grew up in Indiana. She graduated with honors from Butler University and headed to Radcliffe, where she received training as a dramatist. She left Radcliffe and was in advertising in Chicago in the early 1920s. She then landed a job as a reporter before returning to university at what became Yale Drama School and play-writing success. Maurine Whipple (January 20, 1903 – April 12, 1992) was an American novelist and short story writer best known for her novel ''The Giant Joshua'' (1941). The book is lauded as one of the most important Mormon novels, vividly depicting pioneer and polygamous life in the 19th century. Whipple grew up in St. George, Utah. She attended Utah Tech University, Dixie College, then graduated from the University of Utah with honors. She taught high school for several years in both Utah and Idaho. After attending the 1937 Rocky Mountain Writer's conference, she made connections that led to her publish ''The Giant Joshua'' with Houghton Mifflin. Afterwards, she made plans to make ''The Giant Joshua'' into a trilogy, but the two additional volumes, along with two other novels, remained unfinished at the time of her death.
