Mau Ping () is an area and the site of a former village in Hong Kong. It is located within Ma On Shan Country Park and is administratively part of Sha Tin District. Administration Mau Ping is a recognized village under the New Territories Small House Policy. History The village of Mau Ping, together with neighboring Mui Tsz Lam (Sha Tin District), Mui Tsz Lam, were historically part of the Luk Yeuk (league), centered on the township of Sai Kung Town, Sai Kung. At the time of the 1911 census, the population of Mau Ping (Mu Ping) was 124. The number of males was 57. Conservation A dense woodland with an area of 3.7 hectares, within the Mau Ping area, has been listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (Hong Kong), Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1979. MacLehose Trail
The MacLehose Trail is a 100-kilometre hiking trail that crosses much of the New Territories, Hong Kong, starting from Pak Tam Chung, Sai Kung District in the east to Tuen Mun Town, Tuen Mun District in the west. The path is marked by distance posts at 500-metre intervals. The trail is named after Murray MacLehose, Baron MacLehose of Beoch, the longest-serving governor of Hong Kong, who established the Country Parks and was himself an enthusiastic hiker. The trail passes through a variety of natural scenery including beaches and mountains. The MacLehose Trail starts in Pak Tam Chung, then weaves its way anticlockwise around the Sai Kung peninsula. It then hugs the Sai Kung district border with Sha Tin, until it meets the mountains separating Kowloon and the New Territories. Pak Kong () is a village in Sai Kung Peninsula, Hong Kong. Nearby villages include Pak Kong Au, Mau Ping New Village and Wong Chuk Shan New Village. Sai Kung Town () or simply Sai Kung () is a town on the Sai Kung Peninsula, facing Sai Kung Hoi (Inner Port Shelter), part of Sai Kung District in the New Territories, Hong Kong. Small House Policy
The Small House Policy (SHP, ) was introduced in 1972 in Hong Kong. The objective was to improve the then prevailing low standard of housing in the rural areas of the New Territories. The Policy allows an indigenous male villager who is 18 years old and is descended through the male line from a resident in 1898 of a recognized village in the New Territories, an entitlement to one concessionary grant during his lifetime to build one house. The policy has generated debates and calls for amendments to be made.
