Maryland Route 36 (also known as MD 36 or Route 36) is a state highway located in Allegany County, Maryland, Allegany County, Maryland, United States. MD 36's southern terminus is at the West Virginia Route 46 (WV 46) bridge in Westernport, Maryland, Westernport and its northern terminus at U.S. Route 40 Alternate (Keyser's Ridge-Cumberland), U.S. Route 40 Alternate (US 40 Alt.) near Cumberland, Maryland, Cumberland. Between Westernport and Frostburg, Maryland, Frostburg, it is known as Georges Creek Road, and from Frostburg to Cumberland it is known as Mount Savage Road. Like the majority of Maryland state highways, MD 36 is maintained by the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA). Mount Savage, Maryland
Mount Savage is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 873. A small blue-collar community, Mount Savage lies at the base of Big Savage Mountain in the Allegheny Mountains, between the cities of Frostburg and Cumberland. It began as a small farming settlement in the mid-19th century, but it was not until 1844 that the region was put on the nation's map with the pressing of the first iron rail in the United States. After this claim to fame, Mount Savage became the fifth largest city in Maryland. Named as the headquarters for the Mount Savage Railroad and later the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad (C&P), the area was deemed an industrial center. A blast furnace is a type of metallurgical furnace used for smelting to produce industrial metals, generally pig iron, but also others such as lead or copper. ''Blast'' refers to the combustion air being "forced" or supplied above atmospheric pressure. Maryland Route 935 (MD 935) is an unsigned state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from MD 36 in Barton north to MD 36 in Nikep. MD 935 is the old alignment of MD 36 through Barton, Moscow, and Nikep in the Georges Creek Valley of western Allegany County. The state highway was designated when MD 36 moved to a new alignment through the communities in the early 1980s. Route description MD 935 begins at an intersection with MD 36 (New Georges Creek Road) just south of Barton. The state highway heads west as a two-lane undivided road, then turns north at the following intersection with Lower Georges Creek Road, which heads south as a county-maintained portion of old MD 36. Barton, Maryland
Barton is a town in Allegany County, Maryland, United States, located along the Georges Creek Valley. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 457 at the 2010 census. History The Reverend William Shaw, a Methodist minister settled on the site of Barton in 1794. His son, William Shaw Jr. laid out the town in 1853, naming it for his father's hometown, Barton-upon-Humber, England. The discovery of coal in the area attracted more settlers. They came from Scotland, Ireland and Germany, eager to work in the mines. In 1853, the first shipment of coal was made on the newly built Georges Creek Railroad. Eventually, all the deep coal mines had been abandoned and replaced by strip mines, several of which are still in operation and can be seen from the town. Georges Creek Railway
The Georges Creek Railway is a shortline railroad in Western Maryland that performed contract switching and owns a 14-mile line between Westernport and Carlos. The railroad was headquartered at 119 Pratt Street in Luke in the former Luke Post Office. Gerald Altizer and Pat Stakem are the primary partners in the company. Operating since December 2007 on CSX Transportation and plant trackage, the firm did contract switching services for the Verso (formerly NewPage) Paper Mill in Luke. The North Branch Potomac River flows from Fairfax Stone in West Virginia to its confluence with the South Branch Potomac River near Green Spring, West Virginia, where it turns into the Potomac River proper. Maryland Route 135 (MD 135) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Maryland Highway, the state highway runs from U.S. Route 219 (US 219) in Oakland in Garrett County east to US 220 in McCoole in Allegany County.
