The Marlow Heights Shopping Center is an open-air shopping complex located in Marlow Heights, Maryland, on Branch Avenue (Maryland Route 5) at St. Barnabas Road ( Maryland Route 414), and is positioned just south of Shops at Iverson. History The Giant Food store opened at the $10 million shopping center on with of store space, on September 16, 1957. At the time it opened it was the largest and most expensive shopping center in the Washington, D.C., area. On August 29, 1960, Maryland Gov J. Millard Tawes opened the Hecht Company's new $4.5 million, store. This was the fifth Hecht Company store to open in the Washington, D.C., area. Marlow Heights is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,169 at the 2020 census. The Marlow Heights Shopping Center first opened in 1957 (but extended in 1960 with Hecht's), adjacent to the large community of Hillcrest Heights. It was joined ten years later, in 1967, by the two-level Iverson Mall, the Washington metropolitan area's first enclosed mall. For mailing address purposes, the area is part of Temple Hills or Suitland. Marlow Heights is located near the U.S. Census Bureau, Andrews Air Force Base, the Metrorail Green Line and Capitol Hill. Maryland Route 5 (MD 5) is a long state highway that runs north–south in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs from Point Lookout in St. Mary's County north to the Washington, D.C. border in Suitland, Prince George's County. MD 5 begins as two-lane undivided Point Lookout Road which runs from Point Lookout to an intersection with MD 235 in the northern part of St. Mary's County. Point Lookout Road passes through rural areas as well as the county seat of Leonardtown. After the MD 235 intersection, the route becomes four-lane divided Three Notch Road and continues into Charles County, where it becomes Leonardtown Road. Maryland Route 414
Maryland Route 414 (MD 414) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs from the beginning of state maintenance in Forest Heights east to MD 5 in Silver Hill. MD 414 connects the inner suburbs of Oxon Hill, Marlow Heights, and Silver Hill and provides access to National Harbor. The highway was constructed through Oxon Hill and Marlow Heights in the early 1930s. MD 414 was extended through Silver Hill along the old alignment of MD 5 when that highway bypassed Silver Hill in the early 1950s. The highway was expanded to a divided highway between Marlow Heights and Silver Hill in the early 1970s, around its interchange with Interstate 95 (I-95) and I-495 in the early 1980s, and around MD 210 in Oxon Hill in the late 1980s. The Shops at Iverson is a shopping mall located at the intersection of Branch Avenue (Maryland Route 5) and Iverson Street ( Maryland Route 458), in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, just north of the Marlow Heights Shopping Center. Originally named Iverson Mall, it was the first shopping mall in the Washington, D.C., area to be built fully enclosed and climate controlled. History The Montgomery Ward (165,000 sq ft.) store opened on April 20, 1967, when former Maryland Gov. J. Millard Tawes cut the ceremonial ribbon. The second anchor of the two anchor mall, Woodward & Lothrop, opened its store in the Spring of 1967. Bond Clothing Stores, Bond Clothes, Bond Clothiers, or Bond Stores, was a men's clothing manufacturing company and retailer. The company catered to the middle-class consumer. History The company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914, when Mortimer Slater, with Charles Anson Bond and Lester Cohen, founded the stores as a retail outlet for their suit manufacturing company.
