Margaret McIntyre
Margaret Edgeworth David McIntyre, (28 November 1886 – 2 September 1948) was the first woman elected to the Parliament of Tasmania, representing the seat of Cornwall in the Legislative Council. Life and career McIntyre was born in Maitland, New South Wales. Her parents, Sir Tannatt Edgeworth David, a renowned geologist and Antarctic explorer, and Caroline Martha David, a teacher, had moved to Australia in 1882. She was encouraged to become educated and studied for a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1907. She married Dr. William Keverall McIntyre at St John's Ashfield in 1908, and they moved to Tasmania, where he set up medical practice. The couple had four children, including poet Anne Godfrey-Smith. McIntyre was widely involved in the community, and for these services she was appointed an OBE in 1948. Tasmanian Legislative Council
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs. The Legislative Council has 15 members elected using preferential voting in 15 single-member electorates. Each electorate has approximately the same number of electors. A review of Legislative Council division boundaries is required every 9 years; the most recent was completed in 2017. Election of members in the Legislative Council are staggered. Elections alternate between three divisions in one year and in two divisions the next year. Elections take place on the first Saturday in May. The term of each MLC is six years. Girl Guides Australia (GGA) is the national Guiding organisation in Australia. Its mission is to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting members of the community. Membership is open to all girls and young women from all cultures, faiths and traditions. Guiding groups formed in Australia as early as 1909, and by 1920 Girl Guide Associations had been formed in six states. In 1926 the State Associations federated and formed a national organization which became a founding member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1928. It still operates as a federated structure made up of six state-based Guiding organisations. It has roughly 19,000 members (as of 2021) including adult and youth members. 1948 Australian National Airways DC-3 Crash
The 1948 ''Lutana'' crash occurred on 2 September 1948 near Nundle, New South Wales, Australia, when the '' Lutana'', a Douglas DC-3 operated by Australian National Airways, crashed into high terrain en route from Brisbane to Sydney, killing all 13 on board. A judicial enquiry by a Supreme Court Judge determined that the crash was caused by errors in radio navigation equipment used by the pilot to navigate the route from Brisbane to Sydney. One of the passengers was Margaret McIntyre, the first woman elected to the Parliament of Tasmania.
