Marc Grégoire
Marc Grégoire was an inventor of PTFE (Teflon) coated non-stick pans. He was an ONERA engineer at the time of the invention. In one version of the story, he devised a method to apply Teflon to an aluminum mould, to assist the removal of glass fibre fishing rods from the mould. When his wife, Colette M. Grégoire, learned of it, she challenged him to create a non-stick saucepan. He succeeded by applying Teflon to the base of a frying pan. Another conflicting version tells that the technique to apply Teflon on aluminum was developed by his colleague, not by himself, and Grégoire wanted to coat his fishing gear to prevent tangles, instead of wanting to coat an aluminum mould. PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene that has numerous applications. It is one of the best-known and widely applied PFAS. The commonly known brand name of PTFE-based composition is Teflon by Chemours, a spin-off from DuPont, which originally discovered the compound in 1938. Polytetrafluoroethylene is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight polymer consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons exhibit only small London dispersion forces due to the low electric polarizability of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid. Polytetrafluoroethylene is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. ONERA
The Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) is the French national aerospace research centre. It is a public establishment with industrial and commercial operations, and carries out application-oriented research to support enhanced innovation and competitiveness in the aerospace and defense sectors. Tefal S.A.S. (a portmanteau of TEFlon and ALuminium.) is a French cookware and small appliance manufacturer, owned by Groupe SEB (a global manufacturer of cookware) since 1968. The company is known for creating the non-stick cookware category and, for offering frying equipment with a low requirement of fat or oils. In the United States, Tefal is marketed as T-fal.
