Marathon County, Wisconsin
Marathon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 138,013. Marathon County's seat is Wausau. It was founded in 1850, created from a portion of Portage County. At that time the county stretched to the northern border with the upper Michigan peninsula. It is named after the battlefield at Marathon, Greece. Marathon County comprises the Wausau, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Wausau- Stevens Point- Wisconsin Rapids, WI Combined Statistical Area. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (2.0%) is water. Marathon (Demotic Greek: Μαραθώνας, ''Marathónas''; Attic/Katharevousa: , ''Marathṓn'') is a town in Greece and the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Wisconsin Highway 49
State Trunk Highway 49 (often called Highway 49, STH-49 or WIS 49) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs north–south in central and southeast Wisconsin from Wittenberg to Lomira. The highway was initially designated in 1917, but it had not been extended to its current length until the 1950s. Route description WIS 49 begins at an interchange with Interstate 41 (I-41) north of Lomira and runs west from it, passing through Brownsville before curving to the north to meet the Dodge- Fond du Lac county line.
