The Madrid Metro (Spanish: ''Metro de Madrid'') is a rapid transit system serving the city of Madrid, capital of Spain. The system is the 14th longest rapid transit system in the world, with a total length of 293 km (182 mi). Its growth between 1995 and 2007 put it among the fastest-growing networks in the world at the time, rivaling many Asian metros such as the Mass Transit Railway (Hong Kong), Shanghai Metro, Guangzhou Metro, Beijing Subway, and Delhi Metro. However, the European debt crisis greatly slowed expansion plans, with many projects being postponed and canceled. Unlike normal Spanish road and rail traffic, which drive on the right, Madrid Metro trains use left-hand running on all lines because traffic in Madrid drove on the left until 1924, five years after the system started operating. Hortaleza
Hortaleza is one of the 21 districts of the city of Madrid, Spain. History Origin The first recorded human activity in the area of Hortaleza was the existence of a nomadic or semi-nomadic population in the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras, as attested to by the findings of numerous prehistoric tools in sites in the Valdebebas stream and in the historical center of Hortaleza itself, which were discovered at the end of the 19th century by the archaeologist Dr. Javier Pastor Muñoz. The current neighborhood of Hortaleza developed from the old town of , located on the hill formed between the Manzanares and Jarama rivers. The village was supplied with water by two streams, the Valdebebas and the Abroñigal. The town was most probably founded in the 13th century, with written attestation of it by 1361. Line 4 is a rapid transit line of the Madrid Metro containing 23 stations. Originally opened in 1944, the line has been extended many times over the years and is now one of the busiest lines in the Madrid system. History Line 4 originally opened on 23 March 1944 between and Argüelles. In 1958, the line took up a branch of what is now Line 2 from Goya to , which originally opened on 17 September 1932. Manoteras is an area of northern Madrid in Spain. It belongs to the district of Hortaleza and the administrative district of Apóstol Santiago. It is situated between the residential areas of Pinar de Chamartin, El Bosque and Sanchinarro. Manoteras is near the financial city CTBA, Valdebebas Park, Arturo Soria Street, Chamartín station and the hospitals of La Paz, Ramon y Cajal, La Moraleja and Madrid Norte.
