Mamani Keïta
Assitan Keïta, popularly known as Mamani Keïta (born 20 October 1965, in Bamako) is a singer and musician from Mali. "Mamani" literally means "grandmother". She was raised speaking Bambara, and was a backup singer for Salif Keita. She is best known in English speaking countries for her album with Marc Minelli, ''Electro Bamako''. She is credited on four tracks of the soundtrack album of the French animated film '' Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages'' (2005). Mamani Keita released her second album entitled '' Yéléma'' in 2006 and ''Gagner l'Argent Français'' in 2011. Bambara (Arabic script: ), also known as Bamana (N'Ko script: ) or Bamanankan (), is a lingua franca and national language of Mali spoken by perhaps 15 million people, natively by 5 million Bambara people and about 10 million second-language users. Salif Keïta () (born 25 August 1949) is a Malian singer-songwriter, referred to as the "Golden Voice of Africa". He is a member of the Keita royal family of Mali. Biography Early life Salif Keita was born a traditional prince in the village of Djoliba. He was born to the Keita royal family, who trace their lineage to Sundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire. He was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism, a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture. He decided to pursue music in his teenage years, further distancing him from his family as that was against occupational prohibitions of his noble status. In 1967, he left Djoliba for Bamako, where he joined the government-sponsored Super Rail Band de Bamako. In 1973, Keita joined the group ''Les Ambassadeurs (du Motel de Bamako)''. Also known as doubling, the practice allows greater ensemble flexibility and more efficient employment of musicians, where a particular instrument may be employed only briefly or sporadically during a performance.
