Mamadou Maidah
Mamadou Maidah (1924–2005) was a Nigerien politician and diplomat. Mamadou was the Foreign Minister of Niger from 1963 to 1965, and a leading member of the ruling PPN-RDA party. Mamadou—his surname—was born in Tessaoua in 1924, the child of local Hausa aristocratic family, whose father was a Marabout (religious leader) and one time head of the Tessaoua local council under French colonial rule. Maidah became a teacher at Katibougou Teachers College, Kati, Mali (then French Soudan). He served in the French Armed Forces from 1946 to 1947, and taught in Niger until 1958. In 1959 he was elected to the consultative Nigerien National Assembly from Tessaoua from Hamani Diori's PPN-RDA. He became Niger's first Minister of Agriculture from 1959 to 1961. 1974 Nigerien Coup D'état
The 1974 Nigerien coup d'état was a largely bloodless military insurrection which overthrew the first postcolonial government of Niger. The government that followed, while plagued by coup attempts of its own, survived until 1991. Background The Sahel drought of 1968–72 had aggravated existing tensions in the single party government of the ruling PPN. Widespread civil disorder followed allegations that some government ministers were misappropriating stocks of food aid and accused President Hamani Diori of consolidating power. Diori limited cabinet appointments to fellow Djerma, family members, and close friends. In addition, he acquired new powers by declaring himself the minister of foreign and defense affairs. Barcourgn̩ Courmo (1916 Р16 November 1993) was a Nigerien politician and diplomat. Courmo was Finance Minister of Niger, Finance Minister and chair of the ruling party politburo in the 1960s, as well as the Foreign Minister of Niger briefly in 1970 under Hamani Diori. Early career Courmo was closely involved with Diori during the independence struggle, serving as Secretary General of the PPN from 1946 to 1955. Songhai People
The Songhai people (also Ayneha, Songhay or Sonrai)'' are an ethnolinguistic group in West Africa who speak the various Songhai languages. Their history and ''lingua franca'' is linked to the Songhai Empire which dominated the western Sahel in the 15th and 16th century. Predominantly a Muslim community, the Songhai are found primarily throughout Niger and Mali in the Sahel and Sahara. The name Songhai was historically neither an ethnic nor linguistic designation, but a name for the ruling caste of the Songhai Empire which are the Songhai proper of ''sunni'' and ''Askya'' dynasty found predominantly in present-day Niger.
