Maharashtra Mandal
A Maharashtra Mandal is a social group formed to preserve the culture of those born in the Indian state of Maharashtra, and speakers of its language, Marathi, who live outside the state. Such groups exist in India and throughout the world, examples being in Helsinki, Brussels, Houston and Dar es Salaam. Maharashtra (; , abbr. MH or Maha) is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan Plateau. Marathi (; ''Marāṭhī'', ) is an Indo-Aryan language predominantly spoken by Marathi people in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Shivrampant Damle
Captain Shivrampant Damle ( mr, शिवरामपंत दामले; April 14, 1900 in Maval – July 25, 1977 in Pune) was an Indian educationist. He is best remembered for founding the Maharashtriya Mandal in 1924. Biography Damle was born on April 14, 1900 to Vishnu (d. 1928) and Lakshmi (née Chimnatai Modak; d. 1934) of the Damle ''gharana'' of Kivale. He was one of eight children born to his parents; he had six brothers and one sister. His family was Chitpavan brahmin. Damle was educated at the Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya in Pune. He graduated with a B. A. degree from Sir Parshurambhau College before going on to found the Maharashtra Mandal in 1924, serving as its first secretary. Beginning in 1930, he served as the governor of the Maharashtra Mandal. From 1942 to 1948, he joined the British Indian Army. During World War II, he was posted in Belgaum. Miraj (Pronunciation: iɾəd͡z ) is a city in Sangli District and also in Maharashtra, India, that was founded in the early 10th century. It was an important jagir of the Adil Shahi court of Bijapur. Shivaji Maharaj stayed in Miraj for two months during his South India Campaign. Because of its location, Miraj has been held as a strategic bastion.
