Mackay Railway
The Mackay Railway was a line situated in the Pioneer River valley in North Queensland, Australia. It opened in a series of sections between 1885 and 1911. It had three short branches, parts of which were initially built by the local government. It closed in sections between 1959 and circa 2007. History Mackay, about 1000 km north of Brisbane, is situated at the entrance of a fertile river valley, and was quickly developed for agriculture, especially sugar cane. Sugar mills had been constructed with private cane tramways, meaning each mill had a local monopoly. The Mackay railway was built to allow growers to ship their sugar cane to alternative buyers, ending the mill monopolies. Early lines The first section opened from Mackay to Eton, the only other town in the region at the time, together with a branch from Newbury Junction to Mirani, 36 km in total, in 1885. North Eton (also known as Eton North) is a rural locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the North Eton had a population of 186 people. Geography The neighbourhood of Victoria is located within North Eton (). The land is very flat, 30 metres above sea level, with a small rise on the western edge of the locality at the foothills of Mount Kinchant (in the neighbouring locality of Kinchant Dam). The north branch of Sandy Creek flows from the north-west to the south-east of the locality and is part of the Plane Creek drainage basin. The land is entirely used for farming, predominantly sugarcane. History The area has been known as both North Eton and Eton North. Originally known as the Defiance, the North Eton Central Mill commenced crushing sugarcane in 1888. It was the first sugar mill sponsored by the Queensland Government. Gargett, Queensland
Gargett is a rural locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Gargett had a population of 261 people. Geography Gargett is in east central Queensland, located from Mackay. History The locality takes its name from the Gargett railway station, which in turn was named (but misspelled) after John Garget, a railway construction contractor. Barker's Creek Provisional School opened on 16 September 1895. On 1 January 1909 it became Barker's Creek State School. It closed in 1954. The railway from Paget reached Gargett in 1902. It was a busy station during the sugar crushing season. Gargett Post Office opened by October 1910 (a receiving office had been open from 1909). Gargett State School opened on 20 August 1914. North Coast Railway Line, Queensland
The North Coast railway line is a 1067 mm railway line in Queensland, Australia. It commences at Roma Street station, Brisbane, and largely parallels the Queensland coast to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The line is electrified between Brisbane and Rockhampton. Along the way, the 1680 km railway passes through the numerous towns and cities of eastern Queensland including Nambour, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville. Eungella National Park
Eungella National Park ( ; meaning "Land of the clouds") is a protected area in Queensland, Australia. It is on the Clarke Range at the end of the Pioneer Valley 80 km west of Mackay, and 858 km northwest of Brisbane. Eungella is noted for the national park which surrounds it. It is considered to be the longest continual stretch of sub-tropical rainforest in Australia. The original inhabitants are the Wirri people. The park is covered by dense rainforest and is known for its platypuses. Netherdale, Queensland
Netherdale is a rural locality in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Netherdale had a population of 111 people. Geography Netherdale is the most western locality of the Pioneer Valley. The river does not pass through Netherdale but Netherdale is within its drainage basin. The Mackay–Eungella Road passes from the east to the west through the locality after which it climbs the Clarke Range to Eungella. The north and south of the locality are mountainous (part of the Clarke Range) and rise to 890 metres and 670 metres respectively. Between them lie the "valley" through which the road runs at an elevation of 140 metres (in the east) to 180 metres (in the west). The land use in the valley is a mixture of sugar cane and grazing like most of the Pioneer Valley. There is no development of the mountainous north and south of the locality.
