METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence)
METI International, known simply as METI, is a non-profit research organization that creates and transmits interstellar messages to attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial civilizations. In July 2015, the papers to form METI were filed by its founder and president, Douglas Vakoch. It is based in San Francisco, California. Overview METI targets nearby stars and also rethinks the nature of the messages to send. On October 16, 17, and 18, 2017, it sent a message consisting of a scientific and mathematical tutorial to the red dwarf Luyten's Star, just over 12 light years from Earth. The message was sent from a radio transmitter at the EISCAT research facility in Tromsø, Norway. One of METI's missions is to examine people's views of transmitting interstellar messages. METI builds an interdisciplinary community to design interstellar messages, within the context of the evolution of intelligence and language. Messaging To Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence
Active SETI (Active Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) is the attempt to send messages to intelligent extraterrestrial life. Active SETI messages are predominantly sent in the form of radio signals. Physical messages like that of the Pioneer plaque may also be considered an active SETI message. Active SETI is also known as METI (Messaging to Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). The term METI was coined by Russian scientist Alexander Zaitsev, who proposed a subtle distinction between Active SETI and METI: In 2010, Douglas A. Iván Almár (born April 21, 1932 in Budapest) is a Hungarian astronomer. He proposed the San Marino Scale as a means of assessing risks related to extraterrestrial communication. Almár also serves on the Advisory Council of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence). Kerri Camar Chandler (born 28 September 1969) is an American house DJ and record producer. Biography Chandler's influences go back to New Jersey, growing up in a family of jazz musicians. His father, Joseph Chandler, was a DJ and provided him with a background in the origins of soul, disco and the New York Underground Sound. Lowry Burgess (1940 – January 28, 2020) was a conceptual and environmental artist and educator and was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was a Distinguished Fellow in the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry. He also served on the Advisory Council of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence). Lowry was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Nelly Ben Hayoun is a French designer, artist and filmmaker. Born in Valence, Drôme, France, she now resides in London, United Kingdom. She serves on the Advisory Council of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and is the designer of experiences at the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute).
