Märjamaa Parish
Märjamaa Parish () is an Estonian Municipalities of Estonia, municipality located in Rapla County. It had a population of 7,015 (as of November 2012) and an area of 1,164 km2 (336.54 mi2). Märjamaa Parish was the biggest municipality in Estonia by area. In 2017 it was merged with Vigala Parish and three villages from Raikküla Parish to form a new parish (also named Märjamaa Parish). A borough is an administrative division in various English-speaking countries. In principle, the term ''borough'' designates a self-governing walled town, although in practice, official use of the term varies widely. History In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements in England that were granted some self-government; burghs were the Scottish equivalent. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The use of the word ''borough'' probably derives from the burghal system of Alfred the Great. Alfred set up a system of defensive strong points ( Burhs); in order to maintain these particular settlements, he granted them a degree of autonomy. Artur Uritamm
Artur Uritamm (9 September 1901 in Tõstamaa – 8 July 1982 in Pärnu) was an Estonian classical composer, organist and pedagogue. Uritamm was a student of Artur Kapp at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, graduating in 1937. He was on the faculty of the same school from 1940 until 1941, during which time he received a number of awards for his compositions. Tiring of the academic atmosphere and unable to find a position at the conservatories in Leningrad or Moscow, he resigned to work in a mill in Koluvere, managed by his brother. He was asked by Artur Kapp, then director of the Conservatory, to reconsider his decision, and he returned to his alma mater in 1945, staying until 1946 and teaching music theory. During the latter period he also served as the director of the Estonian Music Foundation and as the music editor of the newspaper ''Hammer and Sickle''. Arvo Valton
Arvo Vallikivi (14 December 1935 – 26 July 2024), commonly known under the pen name of Arvo Valton, was an Estonian writer known for a number of books and, among other things, the script for Viimne reliikvia, the highly successful film adaptation of Eduard Bornhöhe's Vürst Gabriel ehk Pirita kloostri viimsed päevad. In October 1980, Valton was a signatory of the Letter of 40 Intellectuals, a public letter in which forty prominent Estonian intellectuals defended the Estonian language and protested the Russification policies of the Kremlin in Estonia. The signatories also expressed their unease against Republic-level government in harshly dealing with youth protests in Tallinn that were sparked a week earlier due to the banning of a public performance of the punk rock band Propeller. Ivo Eensalu
Ivo Eensalu (born 3 April 1949) is an Estonian actor and theatre director. Eensalu's career began in the early 1970s, and has appeared as an actor on stage, film and in television. He became widely known after appearing on the Eesti Televisioon children's educational television series '' Mõmmi ja aabits''. From 1995 until 2001, he was the director of the Estonian Drama Theatre. Early life and education Ivo Eensalu was born in Märjamaa in 1949. His father was a carpenter. He graduated from Järvakandi Secondary School in 1967 and enrolled in the Performing Arts Department of the Tallinn State Conservatory (now, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) the following year, studying drama with instructor Voldemar Panso, and graduating in 1972. Rapla County ( or ''Raplamaa'') is one of the fifteen counties of Estonia. It is situated in the north-western part of the country and borders Järva County to the east, Pärnu County to the south, Lääne County to the west, and Harju County to the north.
