Museum Of Toruń Gingerbread
The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread () is a museum dedicated to Toruń gingerbread. It claims to be the largest gingerbread museum in Europe. Opened in 2015, it is a branch of the District Museum in Toruń and was created with the cooperation with Kopernik, the oldest Polish confectionery company. Kopernik traces it roots to a gingerbread workshop established in 1763 by Johann Weese. The museum is located in the former factory building, built by Weese family in 1885. Earlier, the District Museum's collection of gingerbread-related artifacts was displayed in the cellars of the Copernicus House in Toruń. The museum has 1200 square metres of exhibition space on three floors. Included are a children’s area, interactive displays, videos, communist era interiors recreation, etc. Culinary workshops are offered to the visitors as well. Toruń Gingerbread
Toruń gingerbread (, ) is a traditional Polish gingerbread that has been produced since the Middle Ages in the city of Toruń. History Old Polish sayings connect Toruń with making of some form of gingerbread, and the expansion of the craft, which started in the 13th century. A considerable factor behind the development of gingerbread-making in Toruń was its excellent location. Situated on high-quality soil, the area provided fine wheat for flour, while nearby villages provided honey. The necessary spices were brought from remote countries, mainly India, via a route through the Black Sea and Lwów to the Holy Roman Empire, where the spices were transported by north-German trade companies. Some also came by sea to the port of Gdańsk. The very first mention of Toruń gingerbread comes from 1380 and speaks of a local baker called Niclos Czana. The Confectionery Factory "Kopernik" is a firm producing Toruń gingerbread, gingerbread and other sweets based in Toruń, Poland. It is headquartered at 34 Stanisław Żółkiewski, Stanisława Żółkiewskiego street in Toruń. Still operating as of 2016, it is the oldest confectionery company in Poland, established in 1763. He was the son of Christina née Glaser and Gottfried Weese, a shopkeeper who settled in Toruń from Gdańsk in 1728. In April 1747, Johann learnt the trade of gingerbread baking from Melchior Friebe. After Friebe's death around 1760, Johann Weese married his widow Elżbieta née Lorentz. As a result of the marriage, he became the owner of Melchior's gingerbread factory.
