La Paz () is the capital city of the La Paz Department of Honduras. The town, founded in 1792, has a population of 32,450 (2023 est.). La Paz is located 750 m (2461 feet) above sea level on the Comayagua River near the Cordillera de Montecillos in an area that has mountainous terrain with thick jungle cover. History The town dates back to 1750 when two Spanish colonies existed in the area. The town's title was given on 14 September 1848, when the name "La Paz" was officially recognized by a decree from Comayagua; in 1861, it was given the status of a city, and in 1869 it was made a departmental seat. Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. Liga Mayor de Honduras (Honduran Major League) is the third division of football in Honduras. It is composed of around 200 clubs divided into three different phases. The first phase is composed of local leagues based on municipalities; each league divided in a strategic way considering geography. Champions and runner-ups qualify into separate departmental leagues in a two-headder knock-out format with qualification to the regional tournament at play. The regional tournaments are a final two-headder tournament composed of the departmental league's champions and runner-ups. Each of the five regional champions obtain promotion into Liga de Ascenso de Honduras. Liga de Ascenso (Promotion League) is the second division of Honduran football; it was founded on 17 December 1979 as ''Segunda División'' (Second Division) and renamed ''Liga de Ascenso'' (Promotion League) on 21 July 2002. The league is divided into 4 groups: ''Zona Norte y Atlántica'' (North and Atlantic Zone), ''Zona Norte y Occidente'' (North and West Zone), ''Zona Centro y Sur'' (Central and South Zone), ''Zona Sur y Oriente'' (South and East Zone). The top 2 teams of each group qualifies for the ''liguilla'' (play-offs). Each season is divided into two tournaments, ''Apertura'' (opening) and ''Clausura'' (closing).
