Mundubbera
Mundubbera ( ) is a town and a locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Mundubbera had a population of 1261 people. Mundubbera is the self-proclaimed "Citrus Capital of Queensland", although this is disputed by the neighbouring (and rival) town of Gayndah. Geography The town is in the Wide Bay–Burnett region on the Burnett Highway, north west of the state capital, Brisbane and west of the regional centre, Bundaberg. Mundubbera is built on the bank on the Burnett River. The Mundubbera district is bounded on the east by the Binjour Plateau and on the south and west by the Burnett River. Devonian, Carboniferous, Triassic, and Post-Triassic sediments have all been found in the district. Burnett River
The Burnett River is a river located in the Wide Bay–Burnett and Central Queensland regions of Queensland, Australia. Course and features The Burnett River rises in the Burnett Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, close to Mount Gaeta and east of Monto. It drains a basin covering 33,210 km² which is 1.9% of the total area of Queensland. The river flows generally south past Eidsvold and Mundubbera before heading east, adjacent to the townships of Gayndah and Wallaville before entering the city of Bundaberg. The river flows into the Coral Sea at Burnett Heads, roughly from Bundaberg. The river descends over its course. The Burnett River region is largely given over to growing sugar cane and small crops. North Burnett Region
The North Burnett Region is a local government area in Queensland, Australia in the northern catchment of the Burnett River. Established in 2008, it was preceded by several previous local government areas with histories extending back to the early 1900s. It has an estimated operating budget of A$32 million. History Prior to the 2008 amalgamation, the North Burnett Region, located in the northern catchment of the Burnett River, existed as six distinct local government areas: * the Shire of Biggenden; * the Shire of Eidsvold; * the Shire of Gayndah; * the Shire of Monto; * the Shire of Mundubbera; * and the Shire of Perry. Riverleigh
Riverleigh is a rural locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Riverleigh had a population of 80 people. Geography The locality is bounded to the north, west and south by the Burnett River. The land is used for farming. History Riverleigh State School opened 15 October 1913. It was mothballed on 31 December 2009 and closed on 31 December 2010. The school was located at 289 Coonambula-Eidsvold Road (). The school's website was archived. A Methodist church opened at Riverleigh in 1921. Binjour Plateau
Gurgeena is a rural locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Gurgeena had a population of 35 people. Geography Gurgeena is on the Binjour Plateau (). Land use is principally agricultural and state forest. The Binjour Range Rest Area, at the top of the range, is near the southern end of the Binjour Plateau. Gurgeena is near the northern end of the plateau. It is within the Burnett River drainage basin. History In 1899 land from Boomerang and Buckingah Stations (parts of the Mt Debateable pastoral lease), and land that had been parts of Mundubbera (Mundowran) and Ideraway Stations comprised the Binjour Plateau. Burnett Highway
The Burnett Highway is an inland rural highway located in Queensland, Australia. The highway runs between its junction with the Bruce Highway at Gracemere, just south of Rockhampton, and Nanango. Its length is approximately 542 kilometres. The highway takes its name from the Burnett River, which it crosses in Gayndah. The Burnett Highway provides the most direct link between the northern end of the New England Highway (at Yarraman, south of Nanango) and Rockhampton. It is designated as a State Strategic Road (part of Australia’s Country Way) by the Queensland Government. Dorothy Hill, (10 September 1907 – 23 April 1997) was an Australian geologist and palaeontologist, the first female professor at an Australian university, and the first female president of the Australian Academy of Science. Education Dorothy Hill was born in Taringa, the third of seven children, and grew up in Coorparoo in Brisbane. She attended Coorparoo State School, and then won a scholarship to attend Brisbane Girls Grammar School. She received the Lady Lilley Gold Medal, and the Phyllis Hobbs Memorial Prize in English and History, in 1924.
