Mulan Community, Western Australia
Mulan is a small Aboriginal Australian, Aboriginal community in Western Australia's east Kimberley (Western Australia), Kimberley. The community is in the Shire of Halls Creek, 44 km to the southwest of Balgo, Western Australia, Balgo and about 10 km east of Lake Gregory (Western Australia), Lake Gregory. At the Census in Australia#2006, 2006 census, Mulan had a population of 114. Most Mulan people are speakers of the Western Desert language#Dialects, Kukatja language, which is also spoken at Balgo, Western Australia, Balgo. Kukatja is closely related to Pintupi language, Pintupi, spoken at Kintore, Northern Territory, Kintore and Kiwirrkura and many Mulan residents are closely related to people at those communities as well as at Balgo. Pintupi Language
Pintupi () is an Australian Aboriginal language. It is one of the Wati languages of the large Pama–Nyungan family. It is one of the varieties of the Western Desert Language (WDL). Pintupi is a variety of the Western Desert Language spoken by indigenous people whose traditional lands are in the area between Lake Macdonald and Lake Mackay, stretching from Mount Liebig in the Northern Territory to Jupiter Well (west of Pollock Hills) in Western Australia. These people moved (or were forced to move) into the indigenous communities of Papunya and Haasts Bluff in the west of the Northern Territory in the 1940s–1980s. Papunya Tula
Papunya Tula, registered as Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, is an artist cooperative formed in 1972 in Papunya, Northern Territory, owned and operated by Aboriginal people from the Western Desert of Australia. The group is known for its innovative work with the Western Desert Art Movement, popularly referred to as dot painting. Credited with bringing contemporary Aboriginal art to world attention, its artists inspired many other Australian Aboriginal artists and their styles. Kiwirrkurra, gazetted as Kiwirrkurra Community, is a small community in Western Australia in the Gibson Desert, east of Port Hedland and west of Alice Springs. Kintore (Pintupi: ''Walungurru'') is a remote settlement in the Kintore Range of the Northern Territory of Australia about west of Alice Springs and from the border with Western Australia. It is also known as Walungurru, Walangkura, and Walangura. History The Kintore Range was named by William Tietkens during his expedition of 1889 after the Governor of South Australia, Algernon Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore. In 1979 and 1980 satisfactory water was found in four bores sunk at and near the Kintore Range. The Western Desert language, or Wati, is a dialect cluster of Australian Aboriginal languages in the Pama–Nyungan family. The name ''Wati'' tends to be used when considering the various varieties to be distinct languages, ''Western Desert'' when considering them dialects of a single language, or ''Wati'' as Warnman plus the Western Desert cluster. Lake Gregory (Western Australia)
Lake Gregory, or ''Paraku'' in the Walmajarri language, is a permanent brackish lake located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, situated between the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Desert. Following monsoonal rains it may hold fresh water, but becomes more saline after a number of dry years. Location The lake is situated approximately south of Halls Creek near where the Tanami Desert meets the Great Sandy Desert. The nearest town is the Mulan Community located to the east of the lake shore. The boundaries of two pastoral leases also encompass parts of the lake; Billiluna Station to the north and Lake Gregory Station to the south.
