Mudlick, Kentucky
Mud Lick is a rural unincorporated community in Monroe County, Kentucky, United States. It is concentrated around the intersection of Kentucky Route 63 and Kentucky Route 870, northwest of Tompkinsville. History The community is believed to have been named for a salty stream that was frequently rendered muddy by animals drinking from it. Natural mineral licks, whether associated with brine springs or just mineral-rich soils, were frequented by animals that literally licked the ground to ingest the salt or other trace minerals, often creating a muddy surface. Big Bone Lick in Boone County, Kentucky, is a famous example, but many such “licks” were known to American pioneer hunters and settlers. “Sulphur Lick” is a community name of similar origin in northeast Monroe County. A mineral lick (also known as a salt lick) is a place where animals can go to lick essential mineral nutrients from a deposit of salts and other minerals. Mineral licks can be naturally occurring or artificial (such as blocks of salt that farmers place in pastures for livestock to lick). Natural licks are common, and they provide essential elements such as phosphorus and the biometals (sodium, calcium, iron, zinc, and trace elements) required for bone, muscle and other growth in herbivorous mammals such as deer, moose, elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, tapirs, woodchucks, fox squirrels, mountain goats, porcupines, and frugivorous bats. A small residential village and community surround the intersections of Kentucky Route 249, Kentucky Route 678, and Kentucky Route 100, approximately 3.6 miles (5.8 km) south of the Monroe-Barren County line, where the South Fork and main stream of Indian Creek converge. Big Bone Lick State Park
Big Bone Lick State Park is located at Big Bone in Boone County, Kentucky. The name of the park comes from the Pleistocene megafauna fossils found there. Mammoths are believed to have been drawn to this location by a salt lick deposited around the sulfur springs. Other animals including forms of bison, caribou, deer, elk, horse, mastodon, musk ox, peccary, ground sloths, wolves, black bears, stag moose, saber-toothed cats, and possibly tapir also grazed the vegetation and salty earth around the springs that the animals relied on for their diet. The majority of fossils found in the area have been dated to the Wisconsin Glacial Period (c. 115,000 – c. 11,700 years ago).
